I just went to format the text of a complex email (bold, underline, etc). I have never attempted to do this before in outlook express, and never noticed that the option is grayed out in my program. I couldn't find any settings to change it.

Click on Format and change it from Plain Text to Rich Text.

Tools > Options > Send and check Mail sending format - HTML. You cannot format as plain text.

I tried that first but it didn't change at all. Hmm.

Because the email I'm responding to is from a blackberry, could that be it?

OK - on the same tab check - or uncheck 'Reply to messages in the format in which they were sent'. Not familiar with blackberries - not the sort you mean, anyway :)

In what window are you trying to format?

If nothing else has helped--a very few more ideas can be seen by opening OE's Help and on the Index tab type in "Formatting, messages ".

The problem is strange. Since you are seeing formatting in the email message, it would seem both the person sending it and you are using Rich Text.

A fairly complicated way would be to change the source code after copying into a New Message window, View|Source Edit and then at bottom left, Source tab.

Perhaps as a workaround if this is not happening often, copy into Notepad, Save and reCopy and Paste from there.
