I recently bought a Beyond Micro 160gig external HD. On my personal computer(Windows XP) it was detected and installed by windows without a hitch. However, I needed to use it with a laptop that is running Windows ME. When I connected it it was detected and installed automatically but does not show up in Windows Explorer. It is connected, as it shows up in Unplug or Eject Hardware as well as in device manager but doesn't show up at all anywhere else. On my personal computer it's drive letter is P:, and I don't know if that could be part of my problem or not. Thanks for any help on the matter.

You generally need drivers for it to work with win 98/me.

Did you get a cd or a floppy disk?

Sorry, I forgot to mention the drivers in my original post. Yes it did come with the drivers on CD, but ME and XP both support the external HD without installing the drivers off the CD(the drivers were included for windows 98 users).

So, I did manage to get the laptop to recognize the HD. What had happened was that while all the drivers had been installed correctly, Windows hadn't detected it as an external device. Once I changed that in Device Manager and assigned it a letter it popped up just fine.(I hate simple things like that that I overlook at first:mad:)

Now the problem I'm having is that ME is telling me that I need to format the drive, however I already formatted it on my computer running XP. This issue has come up before with other memory devices with this laptop. I don't know if there's any way around formatting it again with the laptop, but if there is I'd appreciate the information.

When you formated it with XP did you use FAT32 or NTFS's? Windows ME can't deal with NTFS.....

Yeah, I was wondering that myself right after I made my last post. What I ended up doing was just reformating the HD with the ME computer. It was my last resort option, I was just trying to see if there was some quicker way of getting around the problem. Oh well. Thanks anyways.
