Registry files location

Can someone tell me where files that contain the registry are, and what they are called. Seems I heard this awhile back. I hardly remember yesterday, so this is gone from my head.

 

In XP the registry files are in system32\config directory and backed up in the windows\repair folder and consist of the filenames that have no extensions. See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/z01a621675.mspx#ESB for starters.

 

A friend had his computers motherboard blowup. He had 2 applications that he could not find the CDs. He got someone to transfer them from the HD on the original to the new machine. One works and one does not. I am thinking that some required registry entries are missing. I wish I knew of a way to find these entries and put them into .reg files to add to the new machine. This application is quite old, and even with a google, he cannot find a place to get a new CD.

 

I talked to my "friend" and I learn that he thinks that he has found a replacement for the application. I will bow out, and I am sorry to have bothered all who tried to help.
