    Bruce --

I inadvertantly left one thing out of the earlier post.

There are three copies of Explorer.exe: one in C:\Windows, one in C:\Windows\System32, and one in \System32\Dllcache.

After renaming the Explorer.exe in \System32\Dllcache to Explorer.exe.old, you should be able to copy your revised Explorer.exe to both the Windows and the System32 folders.

I don't know what you are doing different, but I just did it on one unit fine in XP Home FAT32, but the other unit in Pro NTFS it will not allow me to do that.

To take this slightly OT, have you stumbled across Resource Hacker yet? It'll help you achieve some minor modifications without needing to go as far as tinkering with explorer.exe (but it will not do everything that you require).

Had it, got it, love it!

Couldn't do doo-doo w/o it! I use that for all my resource hacks & thefts!

How about a good, free, and simple (read:easy) hex editor?

    Jim & Brett ~

Well, I found a ridiculously simple way to get around the Windows File Protection System.

What I did was put a modified copy of the executable on the desktop, then open Task Manager and end the explorer.exe process since you can't do anything with it whilst it runs. Then I selected 'New Task (Run)' from the menu and ran abcmdr.exe (AB Commander). From there I simply overwrote the copy first in the system32 dllcache and then in WINDOWS. Exit AB then rebooted (which wasn't necessary) and ~Voila!~

I did the same procedure minus the AB for the logon.exe and logon.scr. You have to do the dllcache first as that is from where it draws upon to 'protect' what is changed in WINDOWS.

Thanx, Big Jim, for your leading me to water!

Yes, sir, Newt, that page I have bookmarked and that plus a few other tips is what led me to the discovery of replacing the files in reverse order, thus gaining the ability to override the CD insertion prompt. Now I am swapping hacked executables to suit my personal customization preferences like a nut.

Bruce - I think I had a "senior memory moment" when I posted the system file protection thing. I hadn't read thru the entire post where the topic was discussed I don't think. Just saw an item and responded to it.

Ah well. Gotta feel foolish once in a while I suppose but this was for sure mine for the month. Good thing the month is nearly over. :D

Hey, Newt, speaking of the end of the month, did you ever notice how there is always so much month at the end of the money? And how can I be out of money when I have all these checks left??

Your 'senior moment' is often referred to as 'Sometimers'
