I have a new PC, and while I can install this dictionary on it, I can't copy the contents onto my hard drive. Three parts of it should be copyable - the Dictionary itself, the Thesaurus, and the Computer Dictionary. However, I keep getting the reponse that there has been an error (unspecified) and asking whether I want it reported.

I had these sections copied onto my old computer's hd. The publication date was 2001, but I wouldn't think that would affect the ability to be copied. Does anyone know of a solution, or at least a work-around, for this problem?

The cd or the cd drive could be dirty.

I'd be surprised if either the CD or the drive were dirty - I never used the CD once the three elements mentioned above were installed, and the computer itself is only a few weeks old. But, if the CD is dirty, how do I clean it?

    Queuedecoton--
Does that message window have a "Click Here" or "More Details" link which might tell you what the problem is?
If you are using Windows XP, you should have Event Viewer. Control Panel|Adminstrative Tools|Event Viewer|Click on System. Click on the red ball error icon time stamped when you had the problem to see error info. Also click the go.microsoft link for more info--including possibly a fix.
Report any Event Viewer info here.

Clicking on error info links provided no information beyond a description of my computer with entries composed of so many zeroes (not binary code) that I couldn't copy them accurately; they seemed to be basically ID, model, or build numbers.

I went into Event Viewer as suggested, and there are only two red-dot errors, neither of which had anything to do with the Dictionary.

The closest link to "go.microsoft" was "Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Wizards ".

I just realized that go.microsoft etc is an address, but since there is no relevant error listed in the EventViewer, I suspect there will be no relevant response. The go.mocrosoft links seem specific to each individual event listed in the Viewer.

Queuedecoton--Regrets. I hope someone else will come along to help.
The error info link, itself, is indeed very difficult to understand and use. Event Viewer error reports are much easier to understand, but if you do not have any then that is a dead end.
Perhaps someone will volunteer to explain the error info link. Does it or the Error Reporting message window mention which program is having the problem?

    Well, thanks anyway.

I have the feeling that it must be a problem with the disc itself, since there's no record of any problem in Viewer.

Could be some kind of copywrite prevention built into the new computer preventing you from copying the whole CD to the harddrive, that way you need the CD to run the program.

Just a thought since it is a MS product.

You can't copy the whole CD, anyway; only the 3 segments mentioned above can be copied.

I wish I could figure out a direct approach to Microsoft that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

You have never fully explained exactly how or by what method your using to try and copy this to your harddrive so I hope you don't mind that I've inserted an ms article on how this should be done.

    The MS method:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269338/en-us

    excerpt from the above link.....
To copy the contents of Microsoft Encarta World English Dictionary 2001 from the Encarta World English Dictionary 2001 CD-ROM to the hard disk:
    1. Run Setup to install Encarta World English Dictionary 2001.
    2. Quit all of the programs that are running on your computer.
    3. Start Encarta World English Dictionary 2001.
    4. On the Tools menu, click Copy to Hard Disk.
    5. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the copy process.NOTE: The Copy to Hard Disk command in Encarta World English Dictionary 2001 copies the dictionary and thesaurus to the hard disk, but does not copy the multimedia clips. To play a multimedia clip in Encarta World English Dictionary 2001, you must insert the Encarta World English Dictionary 2001 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

These are the directions given by the Dictionary, and I've followed them precisely. They worked on my old machine, but not here, dammit!
