When I close my laptop and then open it it asks for a Windows xp password. I have no idea what it is--I can I either disable this or change the password. I am a novice so go slow:)

Kevin - Welcome to the Board :)

If I understand you correctly you are unable to get back into your laptop after you have closed the lid with it powered up? The only thing I am able to suggest is try a blank password. To disable or remove a password you need to know the password.

If you read Posting Rules#6 when you signed up .....
    Sorry.

Right-click an empty space on the desktop & choose Properties. Select the Screen Saver tab, click Power, select the Advanced tab. Un-check Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby.

But you should really re-set your password, so you know your password. Sooner or later you will need it!

Once re-set, create a Password Recovery Disk.

Would you please clarify your situation - we may be able to help as Arie suggests, but my interpretation of your post is that you are asked for a password after you have closed the lid and reopened it - and as you don't know the password so you can proceed no further. Is that the case?

    resetting password

    Gentlemen,

You have understood my problem correctly.

I was able to follow Arie's instructions and disable the prompt. Thank you very much. Now how can I reset the password?

You can't. If you do not know the password (assuming you tried a "blank" pwd), you won't be able to reset it (other then to re-install Windows).

Oh, there are programs that will let you do that, but we do not allow that information to be posted here. Use Google.
