I have an Asus DRW-1608P burner which has worked great since installation, but yesterday it started to play up. If I put in a DVD, it will play OK, and in "My Computer" it shows up as a DVD-RW Drive. But if I put in a blank DVD, in " My Computer" it will suddenly change to show it as a CD Drive, and I cannot burn anything. Has anybody come across this before. I am running XP, and NO, I did not have Restore Point running, silly me.

    Hi Graham,
    from:

The drive may not be able to read that brand of media. Try getting the latest firmware update from the Asus support website (good luck, I hope their site maintenance has made some sort of improvement). Double check that the update is for your model (flashing the wrong firmware may make the drive inoperable).

No success, try a different brand of media. There should be a recommendation for compatible media brands at the Asus website (check the FAQs).

    Mat,
The first thing I tried was another brand of media, and no luck. The second was to go to the Asus website, download and flash the latest firmware, and again, no luck. I will again check the Asus website and check for compatable media, and give that a go. Many thanks for your suggestions Mat.

    Regards
    Graham

I guessed you may have tried some of those :)

At the moment the only other thing I can think of is to check the IDE configuration. I set optical drives as master and/or slave on the secondary IDE controller. Also, if the OS is on a SATA drive and you connect an optical drive as master on the primary IDE controller, this will give the BIOS a headache because that is traditionally where the boot drive would go and it will be having trouble setting the configuration.

Oh, and did you have (do you have) any burning software still on the system from a previous burner? Having Nero and EasyCD installed at the same time may be a recipe for disaster. Windows has basic Adaptec software built-in, it has caused problems for me in the past when it has clashed with Nero.

Check for updated chipset drivers for the motherboard.
