When trying to access outlook express when already online the screen boots up but then freezes, and can only be exited using ctrl/alt/del keys. if going online from within OE there are no problems - all messages are sent and received, however if any other programme is used, on returning to OE the screen freezes again.
System is using windows 98 and OE6.

video--You might consider Internet Explorer Repair Tool. (IE and OE are tightly enmeshed. And your problem seems it may also involve IE.)
Start|Run|type msinfo32|OK|Tools. Do you have the option to Repair IE? If so, click on it.

Something to try. Open OE and click tools>options and on the general tab uncheck the line that says send and receive messages at startup. Then close and reopen OE when you're connected and see if it works for you.

This is only a hunch and if it works, I'm not really sure why it's doing this as it shouldn't cause this type of behavior. It's a place to start though. :)

Zander your my hero - too soon to know if that cures it completely - how annoying that the fix was that simple and I've been putting up with the 'freeze' for months!!!!

Glad to hear that fixed it for you. Sort of anyway. :) You really should be able to have that line checked and still be able to open OE without any problems. I'm not sure why it freezes like that but it almost sounds like it's trying to find a connection and can't. If you have more than one ISP or more than one connection to the internet it might give you that type of trouble. I could be way off base here though. At least you don't have to put up with the freeze now and it's really no big deal to click a button to get your mail. I've used mine that way for years. Not because I have to, I just prefer it that way. ;)
