    Hello,

My computer (Windows XP Service Pack 1) is infected with something(s) that:
    1. When I log on to the net (I have a Linksys router with two more computers linked), someone is using my address to send out emails, probably spams. None of the other computers exhibit this problem, from the Log in incoming and outgoing addresses it is my laptop that is getting hijacked while on the net. So using the net for downloading and net updates is out of the question at this point as the computer is unplugged. Nothing else so far seems to be infected besides my network access or lack thereof (I can use my software.
    2. When I tried to update and run Norton Antivirus, I got a warning message that it could not do it.
    3. I tried to put a firewall on my computer to prevent the HTTP send out but I got a message saying it is not possible and my computer crashed.
    4. I tried to use Ad-Aware SE but it said the following: "STOP:c000021a{Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process System terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005(0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down. "
    5. I ran Ewido in Safe Mode, it found at first Spysheriff and cleaned it. Then I ran it again and found Logger.Goldun.kw in Windows/System32/ and cleaned it but it could not find nor delete gatexkey.dll (error during cleaning).

I am inexperienced to this kind of problems and I am very worried. I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me. I have kept the logs for Ewido and Hijack this and I can post them here if needed. Any other action I need to take, please, advise.

    Thank you for your time.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
If you have run Ewido and Adaware please post the log for Ewido, Adaware log is not needed.

also post a Hijackthis log file as well, and follow the install instructions below.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It also needs to be removed from the desktop.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Also note that Ewido has had 2 updates today already, so it would be wise to update it and run a fresh scan, and then provide both logs if anything new is found.

Thank you. I have installed Hijack on its own folder at C:/, not on the desktop and I included the logs and reports in a separate message. I appreciate your looking into this.

One thing I will say here is that once you get this computer cleaned you need to update to Service Pack 2.

Microsoft will be ending support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) on October 10, 2006. After this date, customers still running on SP1 will find themselves stranded without any further security updates. SP2 was released on September 17, 2004, so there's no excuse not to run it.

OK, well it looks as tho Ewido may have neutered Haxdoor trojan.

Lets fix some things and see how well it did.

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

OK, everything looks fine, tell me if there are any odd or unusual things going on or anymore malware symptoms please.

Please note: Microsift will end support for Windows XP SP1 on Oct. 10, 2006. It is imperitive that you update your system to XP SP2. Read More @ MS

We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.1.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

    Happy surfing!!

    Hello,

I used Index.dat Suite as you recommended (it took a while because Spy Bot would not initially allow the creation of RunOnce registry update), and now the program defragments my drive. Once this is done (hopefully shortly), should I :

    1. Run HJT and post it here to make sure all is well with my system?

    2. Install XP Service Pack 2 BEFORE I embark on the net again (I have the CDRom update)? I am a bit worried about accessing the internet.

Also, in the C:/Documents and Settings there are the following folders: All Users, Default User, Local Service, Network Service, and Our Dell (the name the computer has). I am the Administrator/Owner in Our Dell. I assume I am the only user in my computer so I have not done anything else regarding HJT.

I avoided upgrading for so long mainly because in the previous years every update would destroy some of my software functions. But given my experience with this incident, I have learnt a lot about prevention and detection and I will certainly keep abreast of the latest preventive software updates.

    Thank you so very much....

    Hi Tom,

Temp files deleted, disk defragmented, and here is the HJT log. I hope my computer is clean now...

What do you think of the Port Explorer? I would like to monitor port activity on my computer for at least a few days just to make sure all is well.

    Thanks a lot,

    Lia

    Everything looks fine.

If you have XP SP 2 on disk, use that, you shouldn't have any problems with it. If you do, post in the XP forum, there are loads of folks there who deal with those issues and are extremely knowledgeable and would be able to assist.

Port Explorer is a great tool has a 30 day fully functioning trial so go for it.

Good luck and once again, glad we could be of help.

    Hi again,

And when I thought all was well.... I used the XP pack 2 CD to update my system, and I connected to the net and downloaded every security update the windows site told me. While I was downloading some items I saw that while I was only at the microsoft website, the Outgoing log of my service provider was registering google.com and the following sites: Hotjobs.com, Savvis, Quest, Akamai Technologies (I did a whois on their IP addresses). Those were registering as HTTP Service. I could not get the Microsoft firewall to work, either, nor to get updates for Norton Antivirus. I got Zone Alarm and it registered that twice something was trying to install items in my other computers. I refused access. I’ve been monitoring the web traffic in my other two computers and nothing peculiar was going on.

I restarted my computer and .... oh, and behold,... the sites from Poland came running using SMTP on my computer. That means I am STILL infected or that I got reinfected during startup.

So, I immediately cut off my internet connection and I run the computer in safe mode and ewido. Nothing found. Nothing on SpyBot and Ad-Aware. Then I ran HJT and below is the log. Thank you for your help so far.

Nothing apparent in your log file.

    Some questions:
    • What port(s) were the SMTP activity on and what were the sites, the ones in Poland?
    • What was wrong with Windows FW?
    • What was it that ZA wanted to install, what were the names or files given for the programs.
    • I'm assuming you saw all this activity via Port Explorer?
    Let me know.

Well, it all happened when I rebooted after the XP SP2 installation. I suppose it is a start up worm? I used Autoruns for tracking my start up files. I can post its log here, if that is OK with you.

    • I had a screen shot of the logs so I am transcribing this as accurately as I can:
      hell.reptile.org
      alt2.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
      poczta.fm
      mailic01.gazeta.pl
      czekolada.com
      buziaczek.pl
      gmx.net
      le.home.pl
      poczta.wp.pl
      neostrada.pl
      a.smtp.korbank.pl
      infinity.net.pl
      white.powerweb.pl
      kubus.omss.eu.org
      eteria.net
      ngmc.pl
      lowrider.pl
      209.200.95.199
      mx3.axelspringer.pl
      mnie.pl
      mx3.twoj.pl
      l.pl
      mail.netstone.pl
      adress.com
      wp.tnij.pl
      pl.pl
      plusnet.pl
      poczta.onet.pl
      mail.wi.tuniv.szczecin.pl
      magma-net.pl

      Ports used:

      113
      1026
      1027
      1117
      1126
      1434
      6346
      6881

I used WhoIS and I found that the sites that accessed the above ports were from Poland, China, US, Italy, England, Germany and Japan.

In conjunction with SMTP activity, I cannot install ANY Windows driven firewall on my computer. In XP SP1 I could not establish the firewall from within Network connections. In XP SP2 it simply refused to accept my OKs. ZA reported no effort to access the computer from the internet, nor can I update Norton Utilities. Norton Utilities is telling me now, every time I reboot that there is a disk in my disk drive and I have to remove it (there is none).

It did not mention any specific names, only that some program from my computer wants to access the other computer.

No, Port Explorer was not installed when this happened. I had my Outgoing and Incoming Log on from my DSL provider and I got a screenshot of them.

      Thanks for looking into this.

OK, well we need to dig quite a bit further here.

Please generate a startup list using HJT. And please check the 2 boxes next to the 'Generate Startup list' button:
    List also minor sections (full)
    List empty sections (complete)

Then after that is done please Download GMER from here

Open up the zip file and double click gmer.exe and allow the gmer driver to install. Select the 'rootkit' tab, select 'scan'. When done select 'copy' and paste the resulting log file back here for me to check out.

Do not fix anything with gmer, lots of legit files can be found.

Here are three reports; HJT's start up list, GMER's rootkit and MWAN's virus list. It seems that Trojan horses inhabit my poor computer.... I divide this into three messages, they are too long...

OK, were going to try and delete this sucker via command prompt.

Go to: Start > Run > type : sc config xkeyshd start= disabled , then click Enter

Reboot, then go to command prompt again and type sc delete xkeyshd

You may have to manually look for the file named xkeyshd.

It's possible there is a dll also in system32 folder, so when you search for it manually, delete all you find.

Also look for these files and delete:
    idcijux.exe
    C:\qjwq.exe

Let me know how that all goes.

    If only... Problem persists

I did exactly as you told me but I could not find anything on the system32 folder resembling the xkeyshd. I rebooted the computer typed the sc delete xkeyshd command. All went well. I updated all my files from the web, and then I rebooted once again to make sure all was gone. Oh, and behold, once again, the streaming Chinese, Polish and others in 1026-1027 and the rest.

Now I have another problem. WinPatrol has been poping up a window every five minutes that reads like this:

A change has been detected in background page displayed on your desktop. Your new page is
If that is OK, then click Yes or press Enter.
Click No and we’ll restore your page to the default About:Home

I say no and go on. I found out also that I cannot change the wallpaper of my Desktop. I did not have this problem before yesterday's effort to connect to the net. Any ideas? I ran ewido in safe mode, nothing. Ran spybot, avast! virus, nothing. I am beginning to use MWAV, I'll post results and HJT once I am done in a couple of hours.

Thank you so much for staying with me on this. This worm is very persistent...
