    Hey guys,

So we've been having computer problems lately... some virus that kept popping up so I think 'hey... i'll clear the registry' . I run this program "easycleaner" on the computer and.. trouble.

I guess it deleted something that says I bought windows xp? Like when I restarted the computer it asked to activate windows.. then the activation code wasn't recognized (probably cuz it was already registered) and I get booted out of windows before i can do anything.

Is there some way of restoring the computer's registry without going through windows? I really don't have the money to take this to a professional so if someone could help out, that would be great. Thanks a lot. -Zack

    Zack,

    Welcome to Windows BBS.

Check the attached screenshot (taken from WindowsXP help files) and see if this helps. This may help if the registry isn't to far gone.
Does 'easycleaner' make a backup of the registry? You could also try restoring that.
Have you changed or added any new hardware to this computer? That will trigger the 'activation' prompt. Post back and let us know if this helps at all.

How did you try to activate it? Online? If so and you received an error message, choose to activate by phone. Call MS and explain what happened and they'll more than likely give you a new activation code that you can enter yourself.

    Excellent

    Thanks guys...

System restore didn't fix anything, but I called up Microsoft and they gave me a new activation code. Computer repair shop wanted $120 per hour to fix this.. now there's just a virus left, but its looking up from here :)

Anyway thanks for everyone's help... I think I'm staying away from registries for a bit.

Here's a good 'online' virus scan you can try... Housecall. Also make sure to 'clear' your restore points in System Restore, they can become infected also. If you need more assistance... be sure to post back. :D

Glad to hear you got it straightened out.
If it ever happens again you can send it to me and I'll call MS for you for only $100. :D
