When I transferred files from an old pc to a new one, all files changed to Read Only properties. Why did this happen and how can I avoid it when I transfer more files? Running Windows XP HE on both pcs.

I followed the directions to the letter, but it didn't work.
    Any other suggestions?

If the files are marked read only, right click on each of them and choose properties. Then uncheck the read only attribute. If there's a bunch of them in one folder, select all of them at once and then right click on one of them, remove the read only attribute and it should be removed from all of them at once.

How did they get that way? It sounds like you burned them to a cd and then copied them from the cd to your hard drive. When you burn them to a cdr they are given the read only attribute. Does this sound like it might be what happened?

After "taking ownership of the files" per the first reply to my post and then following your advice to change the 'read only' assignment, I finally seem to have resolved my problem

How do I avoid this in the future as I still have files on CDs to transfer to the new pc.? Should I change properties of the files on CD before I transfer them?

As Zander posted files burnt to a CD always inherit the read only attribute as you cannot change the file on the CD except by burning another copy.
You will need to alter the attribute once you have transferred them to a hard drive.

The only way I know of that you can avoid this is to use a packet writing program like Nero's InCD or Roxio's drag and drop. I think that's what it's called now anyway. It used to be called Direct CD. Also, the CD you use to burn them to needs to be a CDRW. If you use one of these methods to copy the files and use a CDRW, they'll retain the attributes they had originally.

But, like you said, it's not that big of a deal to change things back later. ;)
