    Hi everyone.

I'm a newbie at networking, so I'm wondering if I can get a little help.

A friend has just bought a lovely shiny new laptop, which she has connected to a wireless network.

All of her photos reside on an old win98 system, which is not connected to the wireless network. I'm trying to transfer the photos from the old system to the new one.

What I'm wondering is can I create a LAN between the 2 computers, while the laptop is also connected to the Wireless network? If not, what do I need to do to be able to create a LAN between the 2 computers?

    Thanks all,

    Justin

Usually, a new notebook also has a ethernet port.

So, you can use cross-over cable to connect the win98 machine and the new laptop.

Another possibility: if your friend's wireless network is provided by a wireless router or a wireless access point, you should be able to connect the win98 into the same network as the wireless connection, by connecting a network cable between the router/access point and the 98 PC.

    more questions!

Hi everyone, and thanks for the suggestions. I'm still having a bit of a play with it, haven't really had a lot of spare time.

I've got another question. Just for a bit of fun, I'm trying to create a LAN with my XP system and a mate's old 98 system (Oh my God, what have I become? I'm now officially a geek!)

My XP system is connected to ADSL, the modem is connected via the ethernet port, so it's part of a LAN. I've set the 98 system up and I can see the other computer and look at sharable files. I can't get my XP system to see the 98 one, it says the network has limited or no connectivity. I've tried going through the network wizard and also try the ipconfig /release /renew thing. It will release, but refuses to renew.

What I'm wondering is, could the software that came to set the modem and network up and monitor it be stopping the ip address from renewing? I'm a bit worried about trying to shut the adsl software down. My ADSL modem only has one port, so I have to shut my internet down while I mess around with networking the 2 computers. I guess it's not an insurmountable problem, I can just run the setup cd if worst comes to worst, it'll be good practise.

Can anyone explain in under 25 words, of at most 1 syllable, how I can go about doing this or just point me in the right direction. I know just enough about networking to be dangerous!

    Thanks all.

    Justin

What's the other computer ? Is it the third computer other than XP and 98 you mentioned above?

Do you have router between the ADSL modem and your computers ? If you have router, the renew thing should be ok. If not, you have to shut down your ADSL modem for a while then turn it up and try again, I suppose you use HUB between your ADSL modem and computers.
