no respond after going into Safe Mode

my PC got virus, and I restarted it after I cleaned it. And because Window can't start properly, so I went into Safe Mode. But all it is just a black screen, nothing happened at all! Can anyone kindly give me some advise on this? Is the hard drive dead? Can it be fixed? Thanks so much!

thanks Charles, so do I need to hit F8 to get into Safe Mode before the screen which asks me if I want to use Safe Mode appears? I will try it when I get home.

 

Yes, continually tap the F8 key as the system starts up.

If this doesn't work, post back. In that case you will have to do a repair to the installation with your XP Cd - hope you have one.

If not, do you have a OEM recovery disc? Using that would restore the system to the day you got it.

I got in by tapping F8, but after that, no matter which one I choose, Safe mode, go back to the date that runs ok... it still sits there. so is installing XP again my only choice now? and my data will be lost right?

Try a Repair install of XP first - if you have a XP CD.

This shouldn't involve user data loss. It will involve re installing MS updates though.
