hey, i bought a pc case from ebuyer the other day....nothing really special only it had 2 extra usb ports and a mic & speaker socket. well after setting up the case with the m/b, drives, etc. i tried to see if i had connected the connectors properly.i found that 1 usb socket was USB2.0 and the othe USB1.1. i noticed after using my usb memory stick in each port.

the problem!.........when i took the mem stick and put it back in the USB2.0 port, i noticed that it heated up very quickly, it also wasnt coming up in My Computer.....after about a minute i pulled it out.

    The Darn thing overheated!!! ......

i opened up the case just to see if any connections were wrong...i didnt find any problems. now it seems to be working fine.......ALSO, IS IT SAFE NOW?

was there a reason it overheated so quickly?.....the drivers for the usb stick were installed the first time i put it in..

Wish all problems were self resolving :)

I have edited your title to reflect more specifically what the problem was.

hmmm....it turns out that none of the USB ports are registering as USB2.0.
i connnected my external HDD and the balloon at the bottom right said that there were no hi-speed usb ports connected to the computer.

how can i make sure that the connectors are correct?

Don't think it is a connector problem, but you can check in the mobo manual.

Look in Device Manager under USB for Enhancrd USB controllers - if none are present you don't have USB 2

Did you load the chipset drivers, etc from the mobo CD?

    Open Device Manager.
Find "Universal Serial Bus Controllers ", (expand phrase).
Do you see the listing USB enhanced Host Controller in the listing?
This is required to run USB 2.0 devices.

It is USB 1 - no USB 2, see here, but most/all USB 2 devices are backwards compatible, but run at USB 1 speed.

so...if i was to purchase extra USB2.0 ports for the PCI slot....then that would work, right?...im assuming them ports have a USB2.0 controller...or are you saying that because the m/b doesnt support USB2.0...it will NEVER be able to use USB2.0?

You can install a USB 2 PCI card if you have a spare slot.

ok ok ...so just to clear things up...the USB ports that came with the PC case are only USB2.0 if your m/b supports it.....(ie. these ports have no USB2.0 controller?)

The 'ports' which are installed presumably on the front of the case are simply sockets with connections provided to connect to the motherboard. The USB controller(s) are on the motherboard.

There is no difference between a USB 1 socket and a USB 2 socket - they are just USB format sockets.

so how would i kno if a USB2.0 PCI card has a USB2.0 controller?
...if it has connectors on the card, it uses the m/b capability not from the actual PCI? ie. if it has no m/b connectors it has a USB2.0 controller..right?

A plugin PCI USB 2 card is self contained - controller is on the card - no connection to mobo except through the PCI slot.

    Example

They are for internal USB/Firewire devices - I am not aware whether or not any such devices are available.
