I prefer to use - with caution jv16 PowerTools which has a large number of useful facilities and is well respected. You can download a free 30 day trial. This program advises the severity of errors in the registry whicjh is handy and it is very easy to identify the purpose of each string found.

If you are looking for freeware RegSeeker is to be recommended.

Be very careful what you do with any registry cleaner - it is quite possible to end up with a computer which will not boot. Always use the backup facility in the program for any changes made.

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

A maintained (uptodate) registry back up is good practice .....

How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

I use a freeware program called Erunt to backup my registry on the first boot of the day and to maintain the last 7 registry backups - which I also backup to another drive

    Hello Keith,

Not clear on what you mean here.

HJT is a diagnostic tool that is designed to show running procceses, Browser add ons, and services that malware create or attach themselves to.

Ewido is a malware scanner in the free version and in the paid version, a realtime guard against malware penetration.

Do you think you have a problem caused by malware?

Or are you looking for a registry cleaner, which is cleaning up the registry from everyday use?

    Regards - Charles

Definitely not necessary or advisable - registry cleaners are best used following an uninstall of software, otherwise on a very occasional basis.

You are highly unlikely to notice any difference in performance between a registry containing a bit of junk and one that is 'perfect'. In fact I would go so far as to say you will see no measurable difference.

Actually I disagree with Pete on this. Of course agree with him on its use in cleaning up uninstalled program's reg entries. I uninstalled NAV2005 and deleted an additional 4 to k reg entries that Add/Remove and the Symnatec uninstaller couldn't get rid of. That experience brought home the fact that the bigger the registry is, the larger the footprint of Windows is in terms of memory usage, since a good deal of the registry is held in memory when Windows boots up, one source of memory usage creep. Over time, the accumulation of "dead" registry entries does make a difference. Some people have developed the habit of re installing the OS on a regular basis because of this.

I do run Reg1stAid (see below) on a regular basis, once a week usually, and the last free version of jvPT, it has an aging system for apps added to the registry and I can immediately spot anything new added.

I also prefer RegScrubXP. It's free, and it doesn't do anything bad to the computer after registry entries are fixed - at least it didn't happen to me.
