Every few days or so, msmsgs (Windows Messenger, I think) reappears in my startup program list. In fact, if I uncheck it from the startup tab in msconfig but don't immediately do a system restart, it'll reappear in about 30 seconds or so.

I'm tired of constantly unchecking it from the startup program list, which I've got whittled down to a nice lean 3 programs.

Any ideas as to why msmsgs keeps reappearing and what I can do about it?

Kind of surprised that you need a third-party program to shut it down completely, but what the hey. Thanks, Pete.

You can do it through Services or by uninstalling it - that applet from Steve Gibson is a 'quickie' method.

Do you use Microsoft Outlook Express? I think that may have something to do with it, because I have noticed mine does that on occassion and it is very annoying. Windows Messenger is tied in with Outlook, so when you load Outlook, Windows Messenger uses it. I don't bother with Windows Messenger now, but hope this helps.

Yeah, I use Outlook Express. Is there some way to shut off that program's invocation of msmsgs?

Whiskeyman, because msmsgs is disabled at the moment (although who knows if it'll reinstall again?), the Windows messenger item on the Outlook Express tools menu is greyed out.

As for gpedit.msc, that's only if I'm running XP Pro, right? Is there a similar command for XP home?

Seems like maybe Pete's solution is the best, don't you think? Assuming, that is, that I can run that command in SP2 as well as SP1.
