Bought a new computer, and had a lot of trouble getting all the hardware to co-exist and getting XP to install - long story, won't go into it further.

Anyway, because I was getting frustrated, I only typed my first name for the user account but had used my first and last name on the old computer. After everything is installed I used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to bring everything over, but many settings and preferances for many programs don't work, because they are looking for a path to My Documents with my full name. XP won't let me rename the folder ( "...is a system folder and is required for Windows to run properly ") and changing my user name in Control Panel>User Accounts only changed my login, not the actual name of the directory.

Anyone know a way around this? Registry tweak or something? Re-installing everything just isn't an option.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi blueberry.

Dont quite understand why your programs dont work but you can view this thread.

" "If you are talking about the registered name, you can do so from the registery.

Start>Run>Regedit. Go into Edit>Find, type 'RegisteredOwner' and hit enter. It should bring up the key:

    'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion'.

Double click on the 'RegisteredOwner' item, and you can change the name there." "

Actually I wasn't clear about that. The programs work for the most part, but most of my customizations do not. For example, I have maybe 100 or so scripts and custom settings in PaintShop Pro that are looking for a path with my full name. I have many programs that are experiencing the same difficulty, where the program works but all of my custom tweaks and settings are looking for the wrong pathname.

Thanks for your reply, that looks like it may do it for me although it may cause some trouble with programs that are currently working OK. Geez - if only I hadn't been lazy for 5 seconds I could have saved myself hours and hours of time
