    I'm told that to use the Discreet Combustion 2 program I need a piece of hardware called a 'dongle'. What is it, how do I get it, et?

    Hi,

    I didn't know that ANY current software still required dongles. They are/were little plugs that you would put onto a com or parallel port that the software would query when it was being run. It is/was a form of copy protection. If the software couldn't locate the dongle, it wouldn't run.

    There may be another meaning for this word, but if so, I don't know it. If you need one to run your software and it's been legitimately purchased, contact your vendor. If it was installed on an older computer and you've tossed it, you may be out of luck.

    Good luck!

    Jim

    To obtain the required dongle, contact the software vendor or a 3rd party retailer that sells that software.

    Jim, as a little side note, Ascent Capture by Kofax still requires a dongle for certain operations within the software. We also have some software here at work called SoftPlan that requires a hardware key. This particular one is a USB hardware key. Dongles are still out there but not a frequent as they once used to be.

    Dongols = Don Gall

    If I remember correctly dongol is a bastardization of the invetors name.

    Also as the story goes he sold the rights to a company which filed bankrupcy within 30 days - so he never got the first penny. The company which bought out the bankrupted company refused to honor the purchase AND stated that the writes to device was an asset they had aquired thru purchase of the other company.

    Don Gall never got a dime for his invention - So he opened an outfit called Rivalock - a software package that would record the signal from the "key" and load a "TSR" which would reproduce it any time the port was queried. - So you needed a valid key to install & run the program - the first time...

    This went on until early 2000 when MasterCam - an afiliate of Autodesk brought suit and the court issued a restraining order against Rivalock to cease and desist.

    Don Gall gets it again...

    Oh yeah - dongle is also the term used to describe a breakout or cable extension for a PCMCIA card, such as a modem, ethernet or DVD decoder card with TV/audio outputs.
