Long time since I last posted, but I know I can still get great advice here, so I'd appreciate some advice with a hardware problem that is driving me nuts....

Aquired an ATI Radeon 9600XT to replace my aging GeForce FX 5200.

However, when I install the card it seems to corrupt my cursor. Cursor is fine in all areas except when one has it over a text box or hyperlink. In these areas the cursor is surrounded by a box containing parallel horizontal black lines.

Problem dissapears as soon as one puts the FX 5200 back in.
Problem does not occur in another system so it is related to this particular PC:

Windows XP SP2 w/ all current updates
Athlon XP 1800
640 MB DDR
MSI KT3 Ultra 2 Motheboard with latest bios

ATI tech support says it is a mouse problem...I disagree.

Here is what I have done so far, in order

Installed latest Catalyst drivers
Reseated Card in AGP slot
Tried different mouse
Reloaded all cursor files
Updated BIOS
Updated chipset drivers
Performed a repair of XP
Wrote zeros to HD and reloaded XP

The issues persists. After the reload the cursor problem occured the first time XP started up after installation was complete. This seems to remove a driver issue as they weren't even loaded at that point.

Like I said the card doesn't have this issue when installed in another machine that is also XP SP2 so it appears to be my system rather than the card.

Any ideas on what I may have overlooked or what could be causing this? A search on MS, MSI and ATI's sites as well as the web have proven fruitless.

Cheers,

ICE.

Hi Ice (how you been? :) )
Have you tried a PS2 mouse (or visa versa...USB)?

Thanks for the response mattman.

I have tried mice on both the USB and PS2 port with no change.

After hunting around a little more I have found this though. The problem occurs with all mouse schemes except the following four:

• Entertainment
• Mouse
• Nature
• Reptiles

These four schemes are not plagued by the problem. So what makes these four different? Do they not use any of the native windows mouse image files? I'm looking into this further.

Cheers,

ICE

SOLVED!!

I think I stumbled upon the solution. After posting my last message I was looking through my zone alarm logs as I sometimes do. Noticed there was an update available. Performed the update...restarted...no more cursor problems with ANY of the cursor schemes.

Who would have thought that a firewall program would cause problems with mouse icon files on one video card but not the previous one? Just goes to show that all these files are alot more interdependant than we sometimes realize. Mentioning the mouse again got me digging deeper. Thanks!!

Doesn't make a lot of sense though since I got the cursor problems on a fresh load before I had installed ZA. Oh well, it's fixed.

Next challenge.

Cheers,
ICE
