This is a difficult question to ask, so I'll just wade in. I bought a laptop recently while on vacation and had it outfitted with a wireless setup so I could receive internet connectivity from the different motels/hotels I was staying in. Now that I'm back home, I was wondering what I have to do to be able to receive the wireless signal from my desktop router? My wife has a laptop that has a same name adapter (Netgear) to receive signals from my router (Netgear), can this new adapter be configured to use my existing router? This new adapter is made by Zonet and is a wireless lan pc card. I would guess a person could go into the wireless network setup area in the control panel or would they have to go into the network connections area and configure a connection that way? What do I correctly need to do?

    Hi Bubba,
Check the tutorials at these sites:
    www.practicallynetworked.com
    www.homenethelp.com
Hopefully it will only be a matter of running a wizard, but it may depend on how complex the current setup is, with things such as firewalls and private networking.
There should also be instructions for how to keep it closed from other wireless networks in the area (if it is not already).

I've went to both places and am still having difficulties finding the solution to my problem. One suggests a program called SyGate Home Network. To use this program costs more than a new router would, surely there is a free method to configure my router to a different adapter. My adapter BTW, worked well with any motel/hotel I stayed at on my vacation. I know we may be talking apples and oranges here but it would seem to me that it should be able to be configured to my home computer router as well. Any help would be much appreciated.

If you just want to use the wireless card so you can get internet then there's nothing to configure or setup, just connect to the router via the wireless icon in the tray. To be able to share files with wife then you still won't have to do much except make sure both your laptop & hers have same network name and have file & print sharing activated.

The wiireless router will accept connections from ANY wireless card providing the comp with the card connects using the appropriate security key. If the router does not have WEP or WAP security enabled then anybody within range of the router (neighbors) can connect at any time.

For some reason, that approach didn't net any yield. I'm sure that it has to be fairly simple to tell my laptop's wireless card to recognize my main computer's router but I don't have the insight.
