I was installing BT device (hate BT) on my IBM T-23 XP Pro SP2 and each time uninstalled and I inserted the BT in the USB I got an increased Com:#. After Com:10 the BT was useless to the GPS application I was using. Went into Device Manager and started uninstalling the 25 Com port that had accumulated.

Next time into DM there was no "Ports" tab and now my Com ports show under a tab call "Unknown ". Not a problem, but what did I do and how can I undo it?

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

Have you updated your drivers at IBM?
There is a specific driver for the USB Serial/Parallel adapter:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=ibm&lndocid=MIGR-41778
It also mentions "configuring" the serial port:
Maybe, unless you specify a specific setup, it will allocate a new COM port each time the device is detected.

You may need to go into Safe Mode and uninstall any COM ports there.

Troubleshooting serial port issues - ThinkPad:

Troubleshooting USB devices - ThinkPad :

Check for any Win XP drivers for the device at BT.
Check the FAQs for the device at BT.
There may be a troubleshooting list in the manual for the device.

    Matt
