I am running windows 98se on my computer with a 1.3gig amd processor, 768mb of memory (ram), a hdd 40gb with 17 unused. I have been busting my brain trying to find out why I cannot apply an ugrade patch to a game I have installed. (Trainz06) I have followed their install instructions to the tee with no exceptions and each time I get the error message "Insufficient Storage Space to apply Patch. You need at least 27080785 bytes free." My system information confirms 768MB of ram with 15% utilized. System memory shows a total of 2078Mb with 2025Mb free. I have opened the System ini. file and upped the VCache to 768432.The patch has 638MB.Can anyone of you experts suggest a solution? :)

That error states you need 27M bytes of HDD space not memory. Run scandisk on the drive , it may correct an OS reporting error of free space.

is the 17 -%, gb or mb?

Thanks for the reply.... I have ran scandisk from two different sources. Windows and norton utilities. Found no errors. I have defragged the hdd. I have cleaned the registry. I have added memory. The empty space on the hdd is 17gigs. I can't believe the Trainz game (a 2gig install) needs anything bigger than 17gigs to apply this 638mb patch.

Try doing a disk cleanup, but check the contents of the folder C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content IE5. You can delete the folders that are named with a series of numbers and letters, Windows will remake them. Go to Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Options and set the size of the T.I.F. folder size at less than 5mb. Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder. These are what you would expect the Disk Cleanup wizard to do, but it doesn't.

After the cleanup run a defrag. If you use Norton Utilities to do a defrag, run that, but run Windows defrag afterwards.

If you have any other large programs that you can temporarily uninstall until the game is patched, try that. MS Office?

I suppose you got the patch from the Game's manufacturer? You may need to download it again. I might also try reinstalling the game itself. Check for any old "Saves" and delete them. Backup the current saves on say, a CDRW disk.

Thanks again.... I will dump the temp folder as you suggest and reduce its capacity. Based on the software's creator, you have to un-install the program saving your own creations, re-install with nothing running in the background and turning off the ativirus stuff. Do not start the game before applying the patch. Done. Followed instructions to the T. Same problem arises.

Seems like you are doing everything right.

I would suggest dropping back to 512Mb of RAM until you get the patch installed. You could check the RAM with the utility in my signature.

You could run the HDD manufacturer's utilities on the drive. That will check the partition information, etc.

    !Update the Windows Installer:

I could not find the problem in a search of their forums.

Thanks Matt... I will download and install the Windows Installer upgrade to see if that might work.... I have ran an independent utility and it did find an error in the reporting of empy space on drive. That increased the capacity a little (11.4GB). That didnot work either. I also re-downloaded the patch from a different mirror site. That did not work. This has got to be a glitch in the Windows 98se system... Probably in the registry. Bill:eek:
