I only noticed by chance, since I rarely use the laptop for audio, but suddenly the sound output has gone. The HW is a Toshiba Satellite 2430 and Realtec AC'97. I have been through the configuration, which is correct, and reinstalled the driver with Toshiba Support. No luck. It may be coincidence but I had to restore the System to an earlier date recently.

    regards,

    r1chmond - Welcome to the Board :)

Must ask the obvious question - you have checked that the sound is not muted?

    I had to ask :D

It seems that you have done most checks that would normally be recommended such as reinstalling the drivers - did you do this by removing all the audio devices through Device Manager and rebooting?

Have you looked in the BIOS for the option to turn off the onboard sound?

The sound is built in speakers (laptop). I havn't looked into the BIOS because I am reluctant to mess with any settings. Do you recommend it? :(

On reflection there is probably little point in ferreting around in the BIOS - as this is a laptop the possibility of using a plugin sound card and thereby wanting to disable the onboard sound does not arise.

I guess you only have a recovery CD or partition and not a full XP install CD so the question of running System File Checker does not apply.

You have checked in Device Manager for any warnings against the audio devices?

I worked on a laptop once that had the sound turned all the way down.

Not being familiar with laptops, it took a couple of days to discover that holding in th "FN" key and using an "F" key, the sound could be adjusted up or down.

Looking closer with my specs on I could see little speaker symbols on the keys.
