System resource performance previously ran from 82 to 94. Since I installed new 2005 Norton Anti Virus software the resource performance has plummeted to 66 to 77. (Resource hog) What may I accomplish to restore the performance. Please advise. Thanks for your time.

Lis--Yes, Norton AV is a resource hog.
But the 66 to 77 resource level should cause no problems to operation of your PC. Start worrying when you get to 10%. :)

Appreciate the reply. Thanks

PC slow down is evident. Contemplating sending Mr. SA Norton to the trash bit bucket and installing AVG. Your thoughts.

Message to Symantec:
Windows98/SE is configured for optimal use of system resources. Completely dissatified with the product. Product is a resource hog and causes PC slowdown. Previous edition 2002 was A-okay? Please advise. Thanks for your time

Some of the highlights of AVG Free for Windows include:

Rapid virus database updates for the lifetime of the product
Easy of use
No system slow down
Automatic update functionality
The AVG Resident Shield, which provides real-time protection as files are opened and programs are run
The AVG E-mail Scanner, which protects your e-mail
The AVG On-Demand Scanner, which allows you to perform scheduled and manual tests
The AVG Virus Vault for safe isolation and handling of infected files
And most of all ... great customer satisfaction!

Symantec's answer to resolve the issue. Lot of seat time to perform what they desire. Perhaps I should install avast or avg? Your thoughts.

This issue can happen due to some of the Norton programs or setting may be corrupted. In order to resolve this issue, I suggest you to uninstall and then reinstall Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2005 and then verify whether issue persists

Please follow the steps to uninstall Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2005 :

1. Uninstall all Norton products from Add/Remove programs:

1. Click Start and then Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs and then click Change or Remove Programs.
3. Select a Symantec product, Norton Anti Virus for example, and then click Change/Remove.
4. Follow the prompts until the uninstall process indicates that it has successfully removed the product.

2.Use the SymNRT removal tool, which is designed to remove leftover Norton files and registry entries that may be interfering with the Norton AntiVirus (NAV) installation. Please refer the link below to use SymNRT utility:

Title: 'Using the Norton uninstall tool'
Document ID: 2005033108162039
> Web URL:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=con_ols_nam

NOTE: The SymNRT removal tool will remove Norton products related to the 2004, 2005 and 2006 version. Please download and run the MSIFIX.bat removal tool included in the above document.

3. Please note that when you purchase a downloadable product from the Symantec Store, you may, for the purpose of reinstalling a replacement copy, download the software two more times within a period of 60 days from the date of purchase at no additional charge.

If it is more than 60 days, then this is not possible unless the Extended Download Service (EDS) had been previously purchased.

If you have purchased the EDS, you may download the software any number of times, for a period of one year after the date of purchase.

For re-downloading the software, please refer to the link provided below:
>Web URL: http://www.symantecstore.com/orderlookup

However if you are using CD version of NAV 2005, please follow the document to install NAV 2005 using CD:

Title: 'Installing Norton AntiVirus 2005 from the CD'
Document ID: 2004072315390106
> Web URL:

I understand that this has taken a bit more time than expected and we apologize for not being able to diffuse your issue in a timely manner, as a result causing inconvenience to you. I will be more than happy to take ownership of your case and provide any insight possible in this or any case, which requires special attention.

In order to provide more precise technical support, I need to gather some more information from you. By getting these details, I will have a better chance of making a correct diagnosis giving you to a good solution. Please provide me the following information:

1. What are the various Symantec products currently installed on your computer and what are their versions?

To find the version of your Symantec product, please follow the document below:

Title: 'Finding the version of your Symantec program'
Document ID: 2002111407412539
> Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002111407412539?Open&src=con_ols_nam

2. Have you used any other Symantec products previously? If yes, what are they?
3. Do you have any other AntiVirus/Firewall installed on your system?
4. Screen shot of system properties Window.

To take a screenshot, please follow these steps provided below:

a. Open control panel.
b. Open 'system'.
c. You will get a window named 'system properties.'
d. On the screen/dialog box, hold down the "˜Alt’ and "˜PrintScreen’ keys on your keyboard. This will copy the image to the clipboard.
e. Open a Paint application (Start—Programs—Accessories—Paint) and click on Edit—Paste and save the file.
f. You can also paste this image on a Word document and send it as an attachment.

As a workaround, I suggest that you disable Symantec Resource Protection, check for the issue and let me know the result. To disable Symantec Resource Protection, please refer to the following document from our Online Knowledge Base that has instructions you need to follow:

Title: 'Turning on or turning off Symantec Resource Protection'
Document ID: 2005013116330213
> Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2005013116330213?Open&src=con_ols_nam

Note: Symantec Resource Protection is a feature of Norton Programs that prevents modification or deletion of Symantec files, processes, and registry keys by unauthorized applications. Authorized applications have full access to Symantec files.

I look forward to hear your response

Informed Symantec thanks but no thanks. Installed AVG and everything is fully operational. Shall we say issue resolved, case closed?

PS: AVG is free and no annual subscription fee. What a country.

Norton are robbers.
