I'm having a problem on my Windows XP notebook computer with a virus forcing me into a logon on screen and then logging me out.

I tried running in safe mode but instead safe mode or getting to a DOS command prompt it starts Windows again and the same login screen appears.

I tried starting up with my Windows CD in the drive but the system is not booting from the CD drive and I'm back at the login screen.

How can I override booting from the hard drive? Can I create a boot disc on CDROM?

Any solutions for this vexing problem?

raylaur - Welcome to the Board :)

Do you know for sure that this behaviour is caused by a virus - do you have any specific evidence?
The standard logon screen or something different?
You need to change the boot order in the BIOS - straightforward on a desktop, but not so easy on a laptop where the methods vary from one manufacturer to another.

When you try to boot from the CD do you see a message on screen ' Press any key to boot from CD'?

On bootup look at the screen for 'Press xx key tho change boot order' or 'Press xx key to enter setup' and so on.

If you post the make and model no. of the notebook we may be able to give you more specific instructions.

re: XP virus logging me out

    Peter, thanks for your response.

I'm running Mcafee Internet Security software and it gave me a pop up message that a virus was detected (then why didn't it quarantine the virus?).

I press <F8> to get into advanced setup and there is no option for boot drive. Pressing and holding <F10> I assume would get me into the BIOS setup but I don't know the administrator password (bought the laptop used and don't know who the previous owner was). This is a Compaq Evo N600notebook.
