Ive come across a problem that has really stumped me. Its also not helped that the person im trying to help is a good 400 miles away, so this is all done over the phone.

Ok, suddenly a week ago his computer restarted. Upon reboot the machine was running very slow, 2-3 mins to open any service, even things like run then 'cmd'. He did a fresh reformt and reinstall of windows, everything was running allright in SP1. He installed SP2 again, after installing all drivers, and the problems returned. This is where i came into it, I got him to check event viewer and he saw several SCM 7001 and SCM 7026 entries. He also says when he boots up in normal mode he gets lines across the screen and slow refresh, some icons look ok, some are corrupted. Its really frustrating as i cant get my hands on the machine.

Any help or new view point would be appreciated. Sorry for the lack of information, but its all i get from him.

    Thanks.

It would help to have the complete information that is displayed when the error in Event Viewer is double clicked.

That sounds like a problem with the graphics drivers.

Since it is happening after SP2 is installed, he probably needs updated drivers that were written for SP2.

I suggest you find updated drivers, firstly for motherboard/chipset and then the graphics (Display Adapter). Everest in my signature may be able to identify the hardware. There is also information and tests in dxdiag (enter dxdiag in the command line, Start -> Run, or search for the file/exe and run it). The first tab has Computer information, the Display tab has graphics information.
