Recently tried to download IE 7 and Defender beta 2 but after the downloads completed it's as if it never happened. I figure it has to do with privacy settings or something. Any suggestions?

I passed the WGA check and I've got SP2 installed.

Do you have SP2 installed? Did you pass the WGA check?

onerepmax - Welcome to the Board :)

Can you download files from sites other than MS?

    Thanks, glad to be here.

As for your question: Nope. Same results. It's as if the files vanish.

    onerepmax--Are you getting any messages?
Are you sure you know where the downloads are going on your Harddrive? It is easy to mix up My Documents with Downloads--at least for me, especially if I am in a hurry.
Try again and this time make a written note of the file's name, and where it is being downloaded. If you do not find it where you expect it to be, run a Search on the file's name. MS often uses download file names that provide little hint as to the subject matter. (like KB890830-V1.7-ENU.exe)

onerepmax--Your reply to PeteC came in while I was typing.
You still can try the suggestions I made above.
However, there could be several other reasons if you cannot download anything from any site.
    1) Clean out your Temporary Internet Files. IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Delete Files.
    2) If your problem is limited to downloading .exe files see Everett's post here
    http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/106171.html
    3) Several other ideas here
    http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=20640
    4) Disable your firewall temporarily to see if that helps. Also be sure you are not running two firewalls. Windows XP installs one by default, so if you also have a thirdparty firewall such as Zone Alarm, you are running two. Disable Windows Firewall. (Control Panel|Windows Firewall)
    5) Note the possiblity of spyware. You may want to try the procedures here
