I'm running xp pro, having various crashes, occasionally the "page fault in non-paged area" but more commonly infinite loop pointing to nv4_disp.dll and general opengl / nvidia bugs.

The thing is, when the computer reboots, it invariably brings up the blue screen before xp starts, telling me that "your bios is not acpi compatible" and suggesting where to get an upgrade. This only happens after a crash, and not during normal cold startup.

My bios is award modular v6. I am running via KT-133 chipset with athlon 1.2g 256mb ram and rivatnt2 32mb graphics card. Games such as quake3, counter-strike and half-life, will not run for more than a few minutes in openGL mode before i get this crash.

When i finally manage to reboot xp, (between 5 and 20 restarts, closing down after the "Bios not compatible" message) I go to the events log. the error is there, mentioning the source "acpi" it reads as follows :-

"AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. "

the link enlicits no enlightenment. I am hoping someone else can, I cant believe my bios is not acpi compatible. I have tried turning off acpi features in bios but if I do this xp refuses to start.

    thanks in advance

    :p Hi,

Yty to download the BIOS upgrade for your motherboard and flash it. Don't forget to reset it to Optimized values afterward. Nothing to lose...

    thanks for the info, however...

I still think the bios incompatibility thing is a red herring. The event log says that bios tried to read from, or write to a protected area. As I have all acpi features in xp turned off, I wonder if this reading from bios is to do with openGL routines. As an afterthought, I went into nvidia settings for openGL and disabled "enable write combining." It seems to have stabilised games, quake3 ran for an unprecedented half-hour after that. My suggestion to anyone with a similar problem therefore is to disable write-combining, and/or hardware acceleration. XP has been running for 7 hours also, which too is something of a first, Fingers crossed this solves several issues!!!

    bios v.6

I just registered to this site and when i saw your problem, i noticed that i have the exact same board with same bios.

i am using windows xp home edition but i dont have the same problem as you. im not sure that its the board or bios causing it because i get an installer error. all the problemes that you mentioned i dont have but would appreciate if you could tell me where to get the bios update cause i cant find one for that version. i went on the award medalion sites and searches as well as Asus sites and searches, and nothing. i dont even know if there is an update available for that bios version.

i will let you know if i find one to.

    good luck!

    finally, a bios update !

realnuts, it looks like we're in luck, try the following link :-

    http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/download/

the new update for mine is :- 663asA15.bin, i had to download it from the asian site, as the european one didn't work properly. Anyhow, this update purports to address xp issues. All bios updates for jetway boards should be there. You may also want to follow the instructions for updating and flashing your old bios :-

    http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/download/update.htm

the prog called awdflash.exe does the job nicely. I made a dos boot disk, by opening explorer, right-clicking "a:\floppy" and choosing format then ticking the "make ms-boot disk" box. (You'll need to boot into dos using this disk, in order to run the awdflash.exe) Save awdflash to a floppy, and have the updated bios (*.bin) file on the same disk. Follow the prompts and this prog will allow you to save your old bios, install the new one, reset cmos and restart.

Hope this does the trick :)
