My little brother got a hold of my laptop and turned off the display adapter. I've tried using the s-video and an external monitor, but I still get a black screen once the desktop is completely loaded. The screen works while XP is loading and I can use some options, but none of them are useful. The only solution I can think of is to crack this thing open and plug the hard drive into another PC and do a complete format and reinstall.:(

    PS -- more details.

I've just tried a remote connection, but it didn't work because the broken pc wasnt set up to do so. I really need some help on this. There has to be some way to go into the system before it finishes booting and turn the screen back on.

    Again

I forgot to mention that I am using Home Edition so I dont get restore points. The only options I get after pushing F8 at startup are: Continue with restart ,and Delete restoration data then reboot. Both have the same effect.

Sorry for posting so much on my own topic.

Have you tried the pressing and hold the "FN" key then pressing the "F4" key. I have a Digital Laptop and by using this combo I can blank my screen out. It's used for when you want to use an external monitor.

    Hope this helps...

    Still no luck

On my laptop it puts it into sleep mode. I've also tried all the other Fn and F# combinations, but they only do simple things like adjust brightness or are video shortcuts (Fast forward, Stop, Play...).

Does anybody have any other suggestions? I really need this thing working. I was right in the middle of writing my own Castlevania game.

Need more info - Make & model

Its kind of hard to make suggestions when we don't know what we are working on.

Note: WME, XP home & XP Pro all have safe points - the question is, was one created where you need it - the O/S tries to not make too many as these restore points each take a good chunk of space. - In W98 "scanregw.exe" was defaulted in "scanreg.ini" to only make 5 backups of the system registry - and these were compressed into cabfiles to conserve space!

You can tell the machine to create a restore point manually - and its a great idea to do so before installing anything new, hardware or software. - Go to the "Help & Support" sections, it will walk you through the process - after you get your system back up.

Have you tried tapping on "F5" during boot to go into safe mode?

    - Once we know what you have we can look up the Key combo to switch video modes.
