    Hi,

I have recently been given a PC to repair. To cut a long story short both the PSU and motherboard are blown but the hard-drive and graphics card are OK.

What I would like to do is to take a copy of the data from the HDD out of the blown PC onto another HDD. I am able to use explorer on a Windows XP Pro PC to view most but not all of its contents.

When I attempt to copy the entire HDD contents I get the following message.

"Cannot create or replace <name>: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not ..... "

This occurs when I try to copy the Documents and Settings directory and others too. The HDD came out of a PC that had Windows XP Home Edition installed.

I would like to recover as much of the data as possible before I format it ready for its new motherboard and fresh installation of Windows XP etc.

Can any tell me what I need to do in order to view and copy the HDD contents?

    Regards BrokenPC

PeteC--OK, so I am hijacking someone's thread, but Broken PC's problem seems resolved.
My question is that when I try to take ownership of a file (or folder) per that MS link, I never am offered a Security tab when I right click the file (or folder) and then Properties. Any ideas?
I was hoping it might be a way of overcoming the "Access Denied" problem with HOSTS and ZoneAlarm discussed here.

I also tested right clicking|Properties on several other files and folders. Still no "Security" tab.
I run WinXP Pro SP2. (In XP Home you have to run the PC in Safe Mode to get the Security tab.) And I have Adminstrator privileges.

    Jim,
do you have "simple file sharing" checked in folder options? If so, uncheck it and restart.

To show the security tab you must ....

    Be using NTFS not FAT32

    and

    Disable Simple File Sharing

PeteC and Christer--I do run NTFS, but Simple File Sharing is checked. I will try unchecking the latter. Who would have thought...? MS makes a point of saying it recommends checking this setting. :)

That is probably the "safe setting" which limits the capabilities of NTFS for people who don't need the full set of file sharing options. It may also make the file system more secure but as I indicated ... ... I'm not 100% sure.
