hey guys. I dont know if this is the right place to go with this problem, but here is what I am experiencing. I have Norton AntiVirus 2005, and I am trying to get my latest updates. When I try to fix the problem, I get:

LU1823: Another running instance of Live Update was detected, but is not visible. This can occur when Live Update is running silently, is running in a different user session, or if you have recently canceled Live Update. Only one instance of Live Update can run at a time. Please try running Live update again later.

Now, with that message said, I went to the Norton site, and turned off live update, and turned it back on. Still I get the same thing. So I went to my Task Manager, and looked at my Processes tab, and there were 4 processes of LUCallbackProxy running. I tried to turn them off, but all I got was:

"Unable to terminate process: The operation could not be completed... Access Denied."

I am almost positive that this is the reason that my Live Update will not run properly. Please, i need some help. Any advice given would be wonderful! Thank you.

    Hello Nason,
    welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

I have heard of problems with LuCallbackProxy (related to LiveUpdate version 3.0.xxx) on Windows 98 but not on Windows XP. Which operating system are you running?

Okey, the problem with Windows 98 and LuCallbackProxy is that it/they do not close down when done. When shutting down the computer, the user will have to close a number of instances of LuCallbackProxy before Windows 98 shuts down properly. I believe the problem with Windows 98 is that ALUScheduler is not run as a service but under the Management Console. It occurs randomly, not always.

Restart the computer and go immediately to the TaskManager. Only ALUSchedulerSvc should be running but within five minutes, AUPDATE, LuComServer and a number of instances of LuCallbackProxy should run and disappear again. Only ALUSchedulerSvc should remain to make it run again after four hours. (Check the setting in Control panel > Symantec LiveUpdate > the Automatic LiveUpdate tab. 240 minutes is the default setting and it will not let you go lower than 30 minutes.)

Which version of LU is it? The most recent is 3.0.166 which I had installed yesterday through Automatic LiveUpdate.

I forgot to mention that multiple instances of LuCallbackProxy is normal. I believe that there is one for each Symantec component, I've got seven instances running (NIS 2003) but they all go away when done.

During the weekend, I had the opportunity to check out the troublesome Win98 computer and it did have problems with LU 3.0.150. When attempting to shut down, the popups for LuCallbackProxy appeared and hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del revealed that LuComServer_3_0 was not responding.

Updating to version 3.0.166 appears to have solved the problem. I started, let it run for 5-10 minutes and shut down a few times without a problem.

Maybe worth an attempt to update to version 3.0.166 in your case too, even if it is a different OS.
