Sharing cable router between 2 pc's

Well Folks I am back determined to get it working, but I need you. To start off with I want to share my Cable Broadband with 2 PC’s adding a third one on later. The two both running XP Pro SP2.
4 Port Router common IP Address : 192.168.1.1
Ipconfig /all on PC1
DHCP: enabled
Autoconfiguration : enabled
IP Address : 220.237.191.20
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 220.237.191.1
DHCP Server: 211.29.132.118
DNS Servers: 203.2.75.132

I had the Router tested by the Supplier and they have assured me that the unit is working correctly.
From what I have learned so far is that the Router with these figures will not be able to see the PC. I believe that I have to change the IP Address of the PC into the range of the Router. How exactly do I do that.

First with the PC connected to the router and the router switched on try:

IPCONFIG /RENEW

That might be all you need to do.

However, if that doesn't work try entering these values manually to the TCP/IP properties of the network connection:

IP Address : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1

 

Thanks ReggieB, I have first done a IPCONFIG/RENEW with the following results:
IP Address 192.168.2.99
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.2.97
But the Router would not connect to the PC
Next I did the manual entry with this result:

IP Routing Enabled............................No
WINS Proxy Enabled..........................No

Dhcp Enabled...................................No
IP Address.......................................192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask....................................255.255.255.0
Default Gateway...............................192.168.1.1
DNS Servers.....................................192.168.1.1

But no joy there the PC and Router will not connect when entering the Routers Address into the Browser : http://192.168.1.1
nothing happens it will just time out.
where do I go from here?? Something somewhere has to be wrong, but where.

Those aren't random numbers. Something on your network is responding to the PC's request for IP address.

I think your router is playing up. I'd suggest you read through the router's manual and reset it to factory default. Then set it up again. To do this, you should set you IP addressing back to automatic.

However, is there anything else on your network that could be responding to the DHCP request and give out the wrong address details? An old router, a wireless bridge or and old server?

 

For what its worth, check out your firewall settings and temporarily shut it off along with any other internet security software.

See if you can connect to your router and post your results.

I am not sure what else you may have tried so I hope I am not restating something you have already tried.

 

Hi thanks, no there is no other Network stuff on it, the Router is brand new, I just received it back last Friday from the Distributor after having been tested.
One thing I have not done yet is try to connect with the Windows Firewall off.
What cable from the Cable Modem to the Router should I be using The Modem is a Motorola SurferBoard SB 5120.
The cable from the Modem to the Router is a 4 Pairs Patch Cable (grey)
AWM 2835 30V whatever that means. It is not the (blue) Twistpatch cable that is used from Router to the PC.
Don't tell me that I have been using the wrong Cable

There are two types of Ethernet cable. Straight through and cross-over. The cable between the router and the PCs should be straight through. The cable between the modem and the router may need to be a cross-over (in the old days it definitly would, but nowadays the cross over can be in the port). So, yes, it could be that you have the cables round the wrong way.
