I have a HP Pavilion notebook. All of a sudden my USB ports have stopped working, the mouse doesn't work, I have also tried plugging in my digital camera and mp3 player but there is no connection. I checked my device manager and there isn't any problem with the hubs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

With the devices plugged in remove them from Device Manager then reboot the computer to see if they get re-detected.

I tried that and nothing happened, I got a message for the mouse saying device not recognized and when I plugged in the camera, nothing at all happened (the computer didn't even show that the camera was connected)

A little confused here - did you remove the recognised USB plug in devices through Device Manager or the hubs?

I would go one step further - unplug all USB devices and in Device Manager remove the USB controllers and all the hubs and reboot.

I did both, I removed the controllers and hubs from my device manager and rebooted, I got messages saying "found new hardware" and then the device drivers were installed, but I am still not getting any connection between my devices and the PC

I cannot find a download for PC Doctor on the HP site, but I don't know your exact model no. Try the box at the bottom of this page.

You could check the BIOS to make sure USB is enabled, although I recall that the BIOS settings on HP notebooks that the user can access is fairly limited.

I would be reasonably certain that repairs would be costly. I think I would investigate a PCMCIA USB adapter before taking it in for repairs.

I would find the downloads for the model at HP and install the (updated) chipset drivers. That may/should reset the USB.

I decided to buy a new mouse and it works so I guess my port is ok, but my MP3 player and digital camera still don't work. It says on my MP3 player that it is connected but Windows Media Player says that it does not detect a device. Any ideas?

Old mouse didn't work, new mouse works. Maybe the old mouse was the problem. If you think so you may have to run through the above suggestions again (I suggest you uninstall the devices and controllers in Safe Mode).

If you have, say, had all three devices connected at once, it may have overloaded the power system. Get a self-powered hub (but connect the mouse directly to the laptop). When investigating USB, I found one manufacturer recommended using a self-powered hub for connecting more than one device and that was a desktop machine.

You probably have software installed for the camera at least. It may be a software problem. Reinstall the software for the devices (and I would consider uninstalling first before reinstalling).
