Okay I thought I had a printer problem, but it just widened. This is on XP Pro, SP2 fully updated. I had my 1175 installed but had to unplug it to move the machine. When I plugged it back in XP started all this found new hardware. Now mind you it will no longer print by choosing the printer as default. I go through the wizard and it gets to the end ans says the hardware could not be installed, the file could not be found. Now everytime I start the machine it goes through the same cycle and error at the end. Now today I start Motorola Phone Tools and follow the directions, plug in the phone and I get teh same error. "The modem could not be installed, the file was not found." These are both pieces that were installed on my previous computer with no extra drivers.

    Thoughts?

:::: Update. I have noticed that when it tries to install the phone that I get the Windows warning "The software you are installing for this hardware Has not passed the Windows logo testing.... blah blah blah." SO the driver is installing and something happens??!! This is the same thing with the printer only there is no non-logo test warning. This phone also worked on the previous computer, the printer worked on the previous machine and at one time the new one.

All USB connections (the printer is not on the LPT port)? I would suspect the USB controller drivers.

A quick and easy reset would be to go to Device Manager and uninstall anything listed under USB Controllers that had the term controller in it. Reboot and when the hardware wizard asked for locations to look for drivers, uncheck all the boxes, that will make it search in the system folders.

Next, try reinstalling the chipset drivers from the CD that came with the computer or finding updated drivers at the motherboard manufacturer's website. Individual USB Controller drivers may be offered or they may be bundled with the chipset drivers (Intel have a "chipset driver utility ").

Hmmm, very interesting idea because yes the printer is connected by USB. The DFI Lanparty board I have doesn't have an LPT port. So I had to get this tooky thing from Newegg that has an LPT port and then plugs into a USB port. I'd call it iffy and the problem if it had not already worked once and the cell phone didn't exhibit the identical problem. I will try your idea tomorrow and post a result.

Well Matt, your remove and readd USB devices worked. I talked to a friend of mine I work with and he confirmed ans said "Oh yeah, you almost have to do that once and a while anyway." So thanks for the lesson :D
