    I shifted about 4 GB of HD free space from my C: drive to my F: drive (data files). When completed, all seemed to be working except TB.

    I get an error advising:

    "TB is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing TB process, or re-start your system. "

    Folloing these instructions failed. Uninstalled TB and re-installed. Same-o, same-o! Nothing seems to fix this ding dang thing.

    Calling up TB from within the Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\ folder gives the same "error ".

    Hep me, ya'll.

    Hi Bob,

    Here are some workarounds for you:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser_will_not_start_up

    How to make Firefox/Mozilla Suite start

    1. Completely close the application (using "File -> Exit ") and make sure Firefox is not running in the backround.
    2. Firefox only. Run Firefox in safe mode. If it starts up in safe mode, the problem is most probably with one of your themes or extensions. Select the default theme in "Tools -> Themes" and disable all your extensions in "Tools -> Extensions ". Restart Firefox.
    3. Before continuing, be sure to back up your profile.
    4. Delete "XUL.mfl" (the name may differ slightly, e.g. "xul.mfasl ") from your profile folder. This file will be regenerated on next startup. Try running Firefox now.

    Check Profile.ini file and ensure the Profile Name is correct!
    (worked for me when I changed a profile name)

    5. Delete "chrome" and "extensions" folders from your profile. (You will lose all your extensions and themes!)
    6. Delete the "Cache" folder. (You will lose your cache.)
    7. If application still does not work, it is usually best to create a new profile.
    8. If it still doesn't work, try reinstalling the application. Remember to uninstall the application first.
    =================

    Personal Note:

    I was using a new Profile, and decided to go back to the Original Profile. When I moved out the New and moved in the Original, I got the Profile In Use Error.

    I went to the Profile Manager
    Clicked on "Create Profile "
    Deleted the default name: "Default User" in the
    "Enter new Profile Name" field

    Clicked on the "Browse" Tab
    Drilled down to the salted folder:
    C:\~\Applications Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.origprofile

    Started Firefox and it opened in the Original Profile...

    Ramona,
    Sorry didn't mention that my FF is working quite well. It's only Thunderbird that's having the trouble. I have the profile located on a separate data partition. This was orig. F:\ but when the re-sizing took place, it was changed to E:\.

    That might be the source of trouble. Was hoping there would be a file in the Mozilla folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\, that I could just modify -- like prefs. js (???).

    Is this possible?
    TIA,:(
    Bob

    Bob,

    Good grief, :eek: :eek: , your Title did say Thunderbird, and TB is all the way thru your post! I was definitely on automatic, as this is more common in Fx than TB.

    The first link I gave you (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use) applies to both Fx and Thunderbird, so you can still use it for troubleshooting. This KB article has very similar workarounds, but for TB:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_profile_that_suddenly_disappeared

    Check the profiles.ini file in the ...\Application Data\Thunderbird folder. It should be similar to this:

    [General]
    StartWithLastProfile=1

    [Profile0]
    Name=bird
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/12345abc.profilename
    Default=1

    Ensure that the Profile Name is correct...

    Haven't had much luck, but haven't tried all the procedures either.

    BTW, I did a full search on both partitions (C:System files); (E:\data files+Thunderbird profile folder). The E:\ was originally F:\ until I re-sized the two partitions (C:\ reduced 5 GB and E:\increased 5 GB.

    Tried image restore (Acronis TrueImage). It did it's job ok but the problem with TB remains. TB cannot find the profile folder on the data partition (E:\mosprofile\rdavis-capeF\bvwq5hjv.slt\).

    Using "thunderbird -p ", in Start/Run, gets me to the basic TB window, and accounts. Unfortunately, the name for the account appears a "rdavis-capeT" instead of the original name, "rdavis-capeF ". Tried to edit the former to the latter but that failed also. Keeps coming back and saying the password was invalid! Yet, I can get to my email on the web (comcast.net) without any trouble. But this is not as 'user friendly' as good old TB.

    Wonder if I uninstalled TB, erased any remaining folders/files in Program Files, rebooted and then reinstall TB would do the trick. But, then again, it does appear that the missing 'profiles.ini' may well be the culprit and this effort might fail as well ???).

    Bob,

    The problem is in the Profile, so uninstalling and reinstalling TB wouldn't do a thing for your problem.

    The profiles.ini file should be located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird
    Even though you have moved the Profile itself to E:\. Don't forget to unhide files when you do your search for profiles.ini:

    Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    Click OK.

    To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
    Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
    Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders. ( I'm sure you know this.)
    ---

    In Thunderbird:
    Click on Tools | Account Settings | Server Settings
    Scroll down to the "Local directory" path
    Click on the "Browse" button
    Browse to the location of the E:\mosprofile\rdavis-capeF\bvwq5hjv.slt\Mail\pop.comcast.net folder
    Select this folder and close Thunderbird

    When you reopen Thunderbird the correct Profile should open.

    Also, for your Desktop shortcut:
    Right click the shortcut and select: Properties
    To this path: "E:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe "
    Add: one space to the end of the path, then: -p rdavis-capeF
    The path should then be similar to this:
    "E:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p rdavis-capeF

    You have been using this Profile for a while, as Thunderbird no longer has the *.slt file. The salted files now are like this: 123abd4e.profilename, with the salting first, plus profile name.

    Tb 1.05.04

    :D Success!!

    Went to the path to the profile.ini, modified the file to reflect the profile path as E: vice F: and all is well and happy in the Great NorthWest!

    I did forget to check the search "hidden files ". I knew better, but . . . ??? That's why my initial search failed. Dum, dumm and dummer!

    Thanks bunches, Ramona. When ah groes up to be big, I'm gonna be a teacher just like you!

    LOL! :D

    You are too funny, Bob. Sure glad you got your Profile straightened out, and TB recognizes it now.

    Happy Browsing!
