I downloaded a 'rm' file which had a icon which I associate with .dat files. In an effort to open the file I right clicked the file and selected the 'open with' selection from the cascading menu. I tried to open the file with three different applications from the list and failed to open it. Now this 'rm' file is associated with Explorer and now has the Explorer icon instead of that .dat icon. This means that all my 'rm' files are now associated with Explorer, doesn't it? How do I change it to the original .dat icon? I think 'rm' stands for Real Media.

    re-associate 'rm' file

Hi Steve. Thanks! The 'rm' file was not associated with any program. I downloaded a 1.5 MB video from a website. It was a 'rm' file which stands for Real Media. It originally had an icon for .dat files. After trying to open it with Explorer it now has an Explorer Icon. This might affect other 'rm' files I download and so I want to associate the 'rm' file back to that .dat file icon. Any ideas? Thanks again.

I'm a little confused in when / what was changed in reference to .rm and .dat file extensions. If you downloaded a media file with a .rm file extension, you will need Real Media player installed to play the file. The .rm file will need to be "associated" to the program Real Player. Just my option, don't install Real Player, not a user friendly, very domineering / bloated program. Try out Real Alternative 1.48 Final

    re-associate icon

Thanks guys. I got it! It wasn't a dat file . It was a Shockwave file. I changed the icon back to Shockwave and associated the 'rm' file with "Real Player" and it played just fine. Thanks for your help!
