Hi, I have been given a PC that appears dead, the owner told me that it stopped with a loud bang. When I plug it in to a powerpoint and press the power on button nothing at all happens no signal no nothing. When I test for power I have power in the cord as far as the Powersupply but no power coming out of any of the wires to the mobo or drives. My guess is that the powersupply went south, but what damage would that have been able to cause to the mobo and CPU.

You would need to use another power supply to determine if any other components were damaged.

You may be lucky - the one and only PSU that popped on me fortunately caused no damage. Guess it depends on exactly where it popped - on the primary transformer winding or on the secondary - or elsewhere. Highest load is on the primary I guess.

    hawk22,
    Hey Mate How ya doin??

You should be able to do the following:
1.)Remove power Cord from the Wall Socket:
2.) Remove the Power Supply from the PC and open the case:
3.) You'll be able to check and see if there are any burned components from the "Incident ", and also there should be a glass Fuse. Check that out too.
If all check OK then try Whiskeyman's suggestion.

    Good luck.

    Hi and thanks,
Well I had a busy time, I had the PSU tested and it was as dead as a doornail since it was in a very compact Desktop case I could not find a PSU to fit that case, he was in a hurry to get his PC back so he decided for a new case (cheap). I swapped the mobo over micro ATX what a pain, but as I had no Manual for the mobo I hit some snags with the wiring for the front Power and Reset Buttons, they work in opposite the little reset button is turning the Power on and the big one has become the Reset button.

I have now downloaded a Manual for the Mobo MSI MS-6533/G Micro ATX Mainboard. P 4 1.5 GHz CPU 256 mb 2100 DDR memory. Front Panel Connectors: JFP1 & JFP2 I used JFP1 (Intel spec.) There are 2 rows of pins

    . . . . . in front and 4 behind front being HDD LED & Reset Switch
Back Power Led & Power Switch.
As I was going by the layout of the old case I have HDD LED. Reset Switch as per diagram in the Manual on the front row, the back I can’t remember. But when I reversed it trying to have the right function for the right button I had no power.
Also I have not connected the front USB yet, can I damage the mobo by connecting these pins incorrectly trying to find the right place for them.
I need all the help that I can get
