The first domain controller runs active directory, dns and dhcp. I just set up a second domain controller and it replicates active directory, do I need to replicate dns and dhcp on it? If so, how?

On my client computers, should I add the IP address of the second domain controller to the tcp/ip properties?

Thanks! This is the first time I have had budget money for a second domain controller and I want to be sure I get it right.

You don't need to replicate your DHCP or DNS servers unless you feel it will be of benifit.

We have three DC...two run DNS but only one runs the DHCP service.
Run more than one DNS or DHCP depends on the size of your org...

You shouldn't have to add the IP of your domain controller in the client machines but if you decided to have a second DNS server then you can add this in as a secondary.

Sorry, but I do have one more question. Will it matter that the first domain controller is W2003 and the second is W2003 with SP1? (The first domain controller doesn't have enough hard drive space for the sp.)

My personal opinion is to have 2 DNS, 2 Domain controller, and 1 DHCP.

    DC-Main : DC, DNS
DC-Second : DC, DNS and DHCP

If you still have windows 9x users, you can add the WINS server into either or of DC.

User PSUEDO mentioned is true, it also depend on the organisation size.

We don't have any problem so far to run the w2003sp1-FirstDC and w2003-secondDC as domain controller.

I am getting replication errors. Doing a little research, was I suppose to run domainprep and forestprep on the second domain controller before I installed active directory?
Event ID 1655 replication access was denied.
