Recently, every time I put a cd in the tray, windows media player starts playing it although I try different players. I've gone to folder options and verified that WMP is not the default player for my audio files. I have turned off every option within WMP that looks as if it might possibly consider itself a default.

What am I missing? I'm tired of having to turn off WMP before starting my preferred (Winamp) player.

Besides, all those weird patterns on WMP's screen give me a headache. :)

    1. go to My Computer
    2. rt click the cd drive icon & select Properties.
    3. click Autoplay Tab.
    4. select the desired options of what you want as defaults for each type pf action, such as mixed cds, audio cds, etc.
    5. make sure to check the box "always perform this... "

    Hello pcigno,

You don't mention whether Winamp is offering to become the default player. I'm supprised if it didn't. You should root around in Winamp's options.

Don't use Winamp, but every 3rd party media player I've ever tried has an option to make itself the default player and making the adjustments to Windows - this behavior manifests itself especially when first installed and in some cases whenever a media player is executed to the point that it becomes a major annoyance - RealPlayer is the bad example.

    Regards - Charles

Open WMP and the now playing tab.

Just below the tab is a small icon. Click it and select visualizations. Select no visualizations. No more headache.

I had set up Winamp as my default player but it seems that sometimes things change over time. I'd had this problem with WMP before but simply using folder options to assign those files to Winamp had solved the problem. I'll look around some more in Winamp itself and see if I can make it the alpha male once again.

    Thanks.
