ok here are my ewido, hijack, and smithfraud logs... none of them got rid of restricted website viewing (blocks most antivirus sites) or homepage resetting... junk processes still running. several internet sites blocked (including this one... have to use my desktop to post)

here are the logs.... pleeease help... oh yea my laptop is a compaq presario S5000 series 1.79ghz and ive also run sypbot search & destroy as well as ad-aware, some of which got rid of some things, including the little exclamation point that kept running in the taskbar telling me i have viruses and sending me to some antivirus site and something called zlop.downloader... mcafee virus scan picks up nothing, but before i ran the antispyware programs it would occasionally pick up "fake alert-b" and clean it but it kept coming back till i ran the spybot s&d... it also keeps messing with my homepage

without further adue... here are the logs

Hi and welcome to Windows BBS.

Can you tell me what home page your system keeps getting changed to? In many cases this gives us a good clue as to the type of infection you may have.

And can you also tell me what other behavior you feel is suspect.

Your log at a cursory glance appears clear of infections, no odd items in the log.

    Let us know.

    Tom

    http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome

thats what it keeps making my homepage

it also keeps restricting the web pages i can visit... including most forums dealing with spyware infections, and intermittently sites like mcafee.com

it also seems to have disabled mcafee's ability to connect to its update server or something because it wont connect when i click update even though the internet works

also it doesnt seem to effect the firefox homepage, although it restricts website viewing just the same... it just says page cannot be displayed when i attempt to visit above mentioned sites

So you have been trying to change your homepage and it reverts back to the link above?

This site is one of many 'default' settings, which probably came as 'spec' from the maker of the PC.

Where have you been trying to change your homepage, via Internet Options?

What page do you want, and what, if anything are you getting with regards to what is changing the page, meaning are you getting a security app, perhaps from McAfee wanting to changing the homepage?

The site restriction, do the sites eventually load, or do you get a 'page not found' load up?

If you're having problems getting to security sites, consistantly, your hosts file may have been tampered with, tho, usually HJT reveals anything other than default MS hosts file.

    Let me know, thanks.

ive tried using internet options, as well as using internet options to reset it all to the default settings when in safe mode

i have no idea what is resetting the homepage though

but the sites are definately restricted... and it tries to load for awhile and eventually says page cannot be found... i have also noticed that right before the page fails to load, the address at the bottom changes to something other than what i typed in

OK, lets do two things, first we need to see some more internal settings:

Please generate a startup list using HJT. And please check the 2 boxes next to the 'Generate Startuplist' button:
    List also minor sections (full)
    List empty sections (complete)

And its possible your hosts file has been corrupted, so lets just replace it with MVPS Hosts

Use this Hosts File Tutorial to get it all set up.

ok so i havent had a chance to create a startup log yet... however ive been messing around with other options and i used XoftSpy4.22 (free to scan have to pay to remove) and it has detected the CWS.homepage host file item... however where the location should be (C:\blah blah blah) it says hbison.com so i dont know how to get rid of this... i am somewhat farmiliar with cool web search and downloaded the latest CWS shreddre from trend micro however when it runs it comes up clean... what to do from here? how do i delete a host file that is not located locally on my machine?

Ignore the info from XoftSpy, its a false\positive. And do not purchase it either. There far more better tools available for free.

As a rule, anything that wants you to purchase it to remove something is not a very trustworthy tool.

I need you to run that HJT start up list, but with the two lil boxes ticked, as I instructed above.

That gives me a more complete, detailed report of other things.

Have you had any homepage problems? Have you tried to reset it and see if it's still wanting to be something else.

This could also be, embedded into one of the HP products, this has happened before with other OEM PCs.

still the same problems though... i managed to find a way to manually update the DAT's for mcafee virus scan and ran a scan in DOS mode (safe mode w/command prompt) and it picked up alot of temp files

i think those got deleted by the CCleaner.exe program tho, soooo i dont know whats still wrong

also, right after i ran the virus scan in DOS, when i restarted windows found new hardware: "Mass Storage Controller" and im pretty sure i didnt add any new hardware... any idea what this is about?

OK back to the forum we go... did the startup log i posted above reveal any fun secrets?
a friend told me to go to http://www.sysinfo.org/ and check all the items in the startup with msconfig so i did that... and only wanted to double check that these two were allright
    HP Wireless Assistant
E_S4I2H1 (researched this on google... belongs to epson and probably not malicious)
    --------------------------------
i also looked up all of my running processes in the task manager on http://www.processlibrary.com/
    here are my results
(yea i made this myself thats why theres lots of parentheses lol)

    PROBABLY NORMAL
HP Wireless Assistant.exe (not found, but seems OK? i use hp wireless assistant so it makes sense)
kavss.exe (googled this and seemd ok since i am running MWAVS, single service kaspersky virus scanner so i doubt this is a problem)
mexe.com (cant find info on this anywhere - but pretty sure its part of MWAVS... when one stops so does the other)

POSSIBLY SUSPICIOUS (could be a trojan or normal, i dunno)
    svchost.exe
    lsass.exe
    services.exe
    explorer.exe

    SUSPICIOUS
spoolsv.exe (what does it mean by "if this process is not accounted for ")

    MALWARE
crss.exe (W32.AGOBOT.GH Worm) --- i might have mistaken csrss.exe for this one but i thought i double checked when i found out what it was a worm... also when i opened up the ewido connection view all of a sudden a bunch of the connections terminated which was a characteristic of the worm, and it doesnt show up on HJT but that could be normal
