What happens when you put the check mark back in TweakUI?

The symptoms you describe may be caused by installing .NET or the update .NET 1.1 which are generally obtained through Windows Update or installed by a program which requires NET to run.

    Try this ....

If it is a recent installation of .NET version 1.1 then, revisit Windows Update and get two additional updates which will be offered as "critical ". SP1 (KB867460) and KB886903. Installing SP1 gets rid of the logon screen.

The .Net 1.1 problem with autologon was fixed with .Net 2. I suggest you go to Windows Update and install it or alternatively here and see if that fixes the problem.
