    Hi

I'll start by apologising to the Administrator for any forum faux pas I may have already made. I am a real beginner to here so please bear with me.

I'm currently having problems with my Quicktime terminating with C++ runtime library issues and a message about "The application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way ".

As any beginner would nowadays I googled this problem and it looks like it could be caused by the presence of malware. Though I'm happy to be proven wrong here.

I've downloaded Hijackthis is it appears the tool of choice for checking the state of the system. Can someone please advise what I need to do now to try to get this issue resolved.

    Many thanks for this.

    Mark

I ran into this problem awhile back when you open QT then the error would display then close QT. It seems there is some type of calculation bug in the software that tries to reference some library that is out of range. What I did if possible is remove QT and install the QuickTime Alternative. You can get it as part of the K-lite Mega Codec Pack. Its' QT without the Apple :D .

Hello frostie and welcome to the Board :)

If Dcrypter's take on this is correct: If this problem ends up being a problem with QT, well and good.

Dcrypter's advice is good, use the QT Alternative - can't stand QT

    If not:

Move HijackThis to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis

unzip (double click on zipped folder)

    click on the execute

    click scan button

click save log and save to the folder you just created

copy resultant .txt file and paste into your next post

In any event, please post back.

    Regards - Charles

TonyT, thanks for the URL. Dcrypter, thanks for pointing me towards the alternative media players; I'll certainly take a look. Your replies and advice are much appreciated.

Problem is, I actually paid for Quicktime Pro so I could convert video for playback on my ipod. So, ideally I'd like to be able to run Quicktime proper again, else it's money down the drain.

So, charlesvar, I'm taking your advice and posting a copy of my Hijackthis log below...

    Hi Mark,

Went thru your HJT log. The following broken BHO's can be fixed. Appended to them what they are. Whether this will solve your problem with the runtime error, I don't know.

I'm not spotting anything else in the way of malware other then the possible one in bold - look for msacmx.dl in C:\Windows\System32\ folder.

Others will look at this and may see something I don't.

    Charles

Thanks loads for taking a look at this for me. Though time for a dumb question from me  ...how do I fix the broken BHO's ?

Also, just out of curiosity, how can you tell so much about the BHO's by just looking ?

    Thanks again

    Mark

    Hi Mark,
Run HJT again and fix those items and then run a scan again and post here. "fixing" means they will be deleted, they're useless and some are not disirable.

How to fix: Place a check mark next to those items and only those items, then click the fix button.
Look them up here: http://castlecops.com/CLSID.html or google.

    Regards - Charles

You're a star. It appears that cleaning up those BHO's has made all the difference. Quicktime is up and running again without any sign of the C++ runtime issues.

Thanks very much for your help on this one.

Also, thanks for info regards how to read the Hijackthis logs. Very useful.

    All much appreciated

    Cheers, Mark :)
