I have two computers in a home network. The windows firewall is disabled on both. Both have Netbeiu installed on the Local Area Connection. Both are set for simple file sharing and have file sharing enabled. The router (Linksys) has the firewall enabled. The problem is that computer B loses it's network connection when copying a large number of files from computer A to B. Both the source and the destination are in the shared folders directory, but attempts to use other shared directories have the same problem. Once the connection is lost it cannot be repaired and system B has to be rebooted. To help solve the problem I have used a crossover cable to connect the two computers which eliminates the modem and the router, however the same problem occurs. What needs to be done to make the remote file copy work?

What kind of anti virus are you running? I have found that they need to be disabled when transfering large files between machines. Even worse if they have a form of "on access" scanner that reads the whole file as it copies.

If your computers are Win95 and newer dump netbeui. It is a flawed protocol, also most networking equipment can't see netbeui because its solely a Windows only protocol.

Switch to TCP/IP and tell the router to DHCP. That should fix most of your problems.

Neither computer has anti-virus installed and the windows firewall is disabled.

I installed NetBEIU only because the computers would not show up in my workstation computers. After the installation they showed up fine. This was from a tip I found on the web.

I was using only TCP/IP but installed NetBEIU for the reasons stated above. The router has DHCP enabled. However the problem still exists when using a crossover cable and no network. Incidentally whether copying from A to B or from B to A, it's always computer B that loses it's connection. A is a Toshiba portable and B is a dual processor ABit motherboard. Does this have anything to do with the MBU - I think that's the right term - or a socket timeout?

Your MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) should be 1492. If your computers are not getting a proper address from your router, try loading a live CD and see if you can get an IP address. Your TCP/IP stack could be messed alittle. That isn't all that uncommon.
