defrag wont work

can someone please tell me why my built in windows de fragmenter has stopped working

I think you're more likely to get helpful answers if you provide more details about what your Windows Disk Defragmenter's symptoms are. If you can provide specific details, then people have more information about your problem and can more likely offer helpful suggestions.

Some questions that come to mind are...

• Can you at least open Windows Disk Defgragmenter?
• If you can open Disk Defragmenter, then specifically what symptom(s) lead you to conclude it is not working?
• Do you get any error messages?
• If you get error messsages, specifically what do they say and specifically when do they occur?
• Are you running Windows XP Home or Pro?
• How much RAM do you have installed?
• When was the last time you successfully ran Disk Defragmenter on that computer?
• Can you recall what hardware and software changes you have made to that computer since you last successfully ran Disk Defragmenter? If so, what were those changes?
• Perhaps you have some memory resident software that is interfering with Disk Defragmenter. Have you tried running Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode?
• What other things have you already tried to get Disk Defragmenter working?
