The other day, connecting to the internet was fine. The next day one of my computer won't connect anymore. Reset modem and router, call ISP and router help lines, everything is fine with those items. I have 2 computers networked together that share the internet and the one I'm using to make this post works fine for the net. The one having the problem says its connected. If I open the connection properties, it says packets have been sent but nothing recieved. If I try to ping an address such as linksys.com, all packets are lost, but if I ping their IP number, all 4 go through. I have the setting on auto detect IP and DNS as does the one that connects to the net. I have put everything in manually and still have to same problem. Some more symptoms...I cannot access the computer on the network that won't access the internet now either. I know its setup right cause I accessed it all the time. I have put in a new ethernet card and same problem is there. This happened over night with no explanation. I have ran updated virus scans and spybot, but comes up with nothing. When I unplug the network wire, it says connection has been lost, plug it back in and it says I'm connected. The two monitors that show your connection...the left one lights up when trying to access the internet, but the receiving one (on right) does nothing. I've also tried just having the cable modem directly to that computer and still the same thing. I've tried a new network cable, different ports on the router, re-installing windows (as an update) to replace any lost files, removed hardware from device manager and let it re-install itself. Everything I can think of is in right and operating, but won't access the internet. The bottom of the internet where it shows the address name thats being access says somthing windows/something/...dnserror.html -- it goes by so quick thats all I could get. I also all of the sudden have an IP address that starts with 169. I was told that was an internal IP, but have no idea whats causing it to do that.

I know this post is extremely long, but I hope everything I put here will help me get this fixed ASAP!!!! Any and all help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!

Was waiting for someone to answer you.
Troubleshooting over a BB is a bitch.
Gotta start a thread on that.

    Oh well-

The 169.xxx.xxx address in your post is significant.
It’s usually the address a computer will give itself if can’t get 1 elsewhere.
Unfortunately it’s not the 1 needed for your router.

Looks like you have 2 or or more computers hooked up to a router - which is then thru WAN port connected to a broadband modem. Is that correct?

Imagine right now the 2 computers won’t talk to each other.
Won’t get into static addresses right now.

Get into the menu on your router - Internet Explore - then probaly 192.168.0.1 as an address
Turn on DHCP on your router.
On computers – START- CONTROL PANEL- NETWORK CONNECTIONS - right click LOCAL AREA CONNECTION – properties – scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) – highlight it – click Properties – then make sure the boxes – Obtain an IP address automatically AND Obtain DNS sever automatically are checked.

Your router will then assign IP address to computers n all will be in same group.
All computers have to be in same group as your router.
192.168.0.xxx or whatever your router address is. First 3 xxx.xxx.xxx numbers have to be the same
    on all computers n router.

If you do indeed have a Router there is no need to share the Internet. You should be able to set up and connect it separatley on each machine.
I have a Router with three machines plugged directly into it and any one machine can get to the Internet regardless of the status of the others.
I also now have a Printer that plugs into the Router. Before that I had a SHARED Printer plugged to this PC. I will not go into the problems there. Especially if I forgot and shut this machine down.
So my bottom line would be to get things set so that each machine is basicly a standalone unit. Yes it may be a bit more costly and work and the software does need to be installed on each machine, but overall in time it is well worth it. And you can still use sharing for some things if you wish too.

BillyBob - You mentioned having all computers directly connecting to internet,

Nothing to do with problem JPK has. Does it?

But anyway - then need all computers to have anti-virus- anti-adaware- ect-instead of just 1. Guess it's a matter of choice n how many computers you have networked. Am I gonna set up a server or not.

Let's move this reply to General Discussions.

Well the result was wiping the computer clean and starting over. I talked to a family friend thats been in IT for 15 years or so. I was on the phone with him for two hours. I wound up finding a file flsmngr.dll which was part of a trojan virus he looked up. This trojan shut down the connection and allowed someone to have control of the computer as a port to travel through. I also found some other files that related to it. Unfortunely, it could not be recovered, nor was it detected my up to date virus scans and spyware programs (tried 2 different ones) So somehow it got my my active virus scan, not picked up on a regular scan for spyware and got through the firewall of the lynksys router. Oh well, at least starting over the computer won't be as bogged down. At least I was able to back up my music and pictures and other small important files that I know weren't infected.

With these computers one never knows. When setting up my system I had a few problems ( Internet wise ) untill I shut all except the one I was working on off and worked on only one at a time.

I also agree to it being a matter of choice.

Yes. It does take AV, Software etc. on each machine. And I do have to remember to update all three. But as I said before, over all it has been well worth it to have each machine completely independent.

The main thing I had to remember is that the Router and Modem must be kept powered at all times.
