Specifically--------McAfee Antivirus and BlackIce sometimes show up in the system tray ---and sometimes they don't. Mostley don't. I have checked several of the obvious things , like App settings and the App trouble shooter , but all point to something else in the system interfering with the system tray

Do they disappear when they are inactive? Did you check the setting s for the system tray? Right click on an empty spot on the tray and click the customize button. My icons there disappear after awhile of not being used. Let me know if I misunderstood the problem.

Would if I had a customize button

 No you did't misunderstand, but my problem seems to be derived from about the time I installed blackice m now almost all icns that were there are not unless I start the program from it icon . However ---the programs with missing icons in the tray ---are already running ! Once the startmenu icon is clicked on , then the program will pop up , then when closed or minimized, those particular programs will minimize to the tray and stay---all accept blackice . I have tried to reinstall blackice and have consulted their knowledge base , but all things point to something else in my system -----what exactly !!!????? now there is where I am stumped

    Dussman,

Right-click a blank spot on the 'Taskbar', select 'Properties', then click the 'taskbar' tab, then click the 'Customize' button. That should show you a list of current items in your 'System Tray' and allow you to 'Always Show', 'Hide when inactive' or 'Always hide'. See if you can set the appropriate settings. HTH

    That didn't do it either

I tried that earlier , even rebooted and the programs that are supposed to be there are't . They are running in the background but something is still not right

I hope somebody else will pop in here for other suggestions. I can't think of anything right now. Sorry.

Try running Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! from Kelly's Korner and see if any of the Notification Area (System Tray) options fix the problem.

Glad to hear it worked for you - I could not be certain that it would, but it was always worth a shot :)
