Another friend of mine asked me to check his Dell machine.
Someone told him he had a "Trojan Horse "
I have scanned with Ad-Aware, Ewido and Avast home free.
76 spyware were eliminated, no viruses were reported by Avast

Hi dad....this looks to be a Vundo infection, but I'm needing to do some more research, be back shortly.

OK, the major infection point of this is outdated JAva, so lets fix that first.

• Go to Start > >Control Panel >> add/remove programs.
• Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
• It should have an icon next to it which looks like cup of coffee
• Select it and click Remove.

Then Download and install the newest version from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Now to rid Vundo:

• Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
• You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
• When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Is the machine acting any better at this point? Please let me know what if any symptoms remain and\or are new, thanks.

Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

O20 - Winlogon Notify: sstqr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqr.dll (file missing)

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqr.dll <<<---this file

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

*Note:If the file does not want to delete, do the following:

1) Please download the Killbox.
Save it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select "Delete on Reboot ", and then select "All files ".

3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqr.dll


4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard ".

5) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

 

Ok Tom, after going into safe mode, I opened up hidden files and protected OS files.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqr.dll did not exist.
Booted back into normal mode and ran a HJT scan, log is below:

Excellent, well I won't go into my usually protection speech as you've already 'heard' that.
