    I ran System File Checker and it identified a dll file as "possibly corrupted ". The file is "sregkic.dll" size 31.0 KB and is located in the C:\Windows\System directory on my Win98SE OS. The file is an "Application Extension" and clicking on properties shows no information for Version etc. The file has the same dating as most of my Win98SE files (April 23, 1999) so I am assuming it was installed with Win98. However I cannot find any trace of it in the Win 98 setup directory Cab files. Nor have I been able to find anything on searches on Google, Microsoft or many dll download sites.

    Can anyone tell me what this file is, and if it is critical to Win98 operations?

    That file is not a reconized Windows file nor can it be found through a search engine. This is the sign of malware.

    I would do the following steps and post a HijackThis log here http://www.windowsbbs.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41. Include HijackThis in your title and also make a reference to the file and your problems.

    Run the following online scan.

    Kaspersky Anti-Virus: Free Online Virus Scanner

    Download, update, run and remove anything they find;

    AdAware

    AdAware tutorial

    SpyBot S&D

    SpyBot tutorial

    Go to control panel/ folder options/ view and select show hidden and system files.

    Also uncheck "hide file extensions of known file types "

    After doing all this post a HJT log at the above link.

    HijackThis 1.99.1

    After downloading HijackThis do the following.

    Put HijackThis in a Permanent folder.

    Click My Computer, then C:\

    In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.

    That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis ".

    Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

    Click the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button.

    Notepad will open with the logfile. Copy & paste it here.

    This will allow backups to be made and saved By HijackThis in case something goes wrong.

    Thanks, Whiskeyman, I will run Kapersky AV online, have already run Spybot and Ad-Aware, but will run again. Will post a HJT log in Spyware section when I have done the above.

    My search of the web and MS also turned up nothing. Still wonder about the "creation date" of the dll being the same as my other Win98 dll's although I suppose if it is malware it could pick up on that.:eek:

    Back to you later, I am on dialup so the Kapersky scan will take a while.:rolleyes:
