Last night, wife calls me asks how to restart router. So no problems at the time. I get home, wife said "oh.. I turned your computer off by mistake and turn it back on ".

Well, XP was waiting for a log in, so I do that, start Firefox, and Yahoo home page did not start up, but GOOGLE's page with firefox on it as my start page.

Lost my bookmarks, preferences, firefox skin.. all but my passwords. My profile is set to default.. which I Have NO idea what my user name was for this. How did this happen?? I did a spyware check, nothing.. virus scaned this morning, clean.

    Using Firefox 1.0.6
    XP Home Ed.

any ideas befor I distroy it ??

    Basstracker,

If Windows' shut down isn't normal, then Firefox doesn't have a chance to write to the prefs.js file, which corrupts the Profile. When Firefox is restarted it creates a new (default) Profile.

To find the original Profile, look here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles,
or do a search for one of the files in your Profile, such as: bookmarks.html, or abook.mab, etc.

If you have a backup of your Profiles folder, then you can replace the prefs.js file in the original Profile. However, if you have no backup, then you will need to copy selected files from the original Profile to the new Profile...

Once you have everything back in order, you should really consider updating to Firefox 1.5.0.4.

Did a search, bookmarks.html is found, but is empty.. no abook.mab Tried doing a restore, no go. No backup, guess I dont expect a program to "delete" files because of a bad shutdown. I went into safe mode, still could not find old files. For Firefox to be so much better then old netscape and far better then IE, seems sad that it would delete some files and not others.

    Thanks

If the profile can't be found, maybe you could do a system restore to just before the bad shut down happened. Maybe everything would return to normal for you.

    Basstracker,

As you are using Windows XP, and trying to find the Profile here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    5. Click OK.

To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders.

There should definitely be an abook.mab file.
