Yesterday I moved my home computer to another room and in the process ended up a cable short and lost system sound. I have no idea how a cable disappeared into thin air, but another was easily purchased.

This is the weird problem though: I've moved this computer and re-connected it at least twenty times in the past so I know where everything plugs in. Today the PC speakers won't pick up any sound except what comes through Intervideo WinDVR - my tv tuner software. I can't play system sounds, music or listen to streaming audio off the web.

I've tried unplugging my speakers and using the Philips monitor and the same problem - the tv tuner will play sound but nothing else will.

Under Sounds and Audio Devices Properties I have my default device C-Media Wave Device. Advanced Audio Properties has speakers set to Desktop Stereo Speakers and under the Performance tab Hardware acceleration and Sample Rate are both set to full/best. Obviously all volume sliders are un-muted.

I realise this is a hard thing to advise on from a distance, but if anyone else has ever experienced something similar, perhaps you could share your fix.

    Thanks in advance,
    B

    Hi B,
I would uninstall the software for Intervideo, check again, then reinstall it.

Check if there are updated drivers for your audio. There may be a clash of file versions (somewhere?).

Thanks Matt - I'll try your suggestions. It does seem weird though that everything worked fine on Saturday and then on Sunday it didn't work.
